Wilson said the Red Rocks are ready to prove themselves after a hard season of work. "I was sitting there watching [defending national champion] Florida [last year] and their expressions when they found out they won, and that was on one hand really hard, but on the other hand, I wanted that so bad," Wilson said. "That's what's pushing me this postseason." g.adams@chronicle.utah.edu that. Utah has struggled to figure out the Pac-12 thing. Admittedly, the team has been dealt some harsh blows, including injuries to quarterbacks that no one could have predicted. Still, wins are the bottom line regardless of circumstance, and Whittingham has had a hard time racking those up. This is where the comparison with Krystkowiak comes into play. At most Division I schools, the success of the football and men's basketball teams are measured against each other, and it's all about "What have you done for me lately?" Right now, there's no question that the scale is tipping in favor of the men's basketball program, as Krystkowiak has done a lot more for Hill lately than Whittingham has. He's done it under much more difficult circumstances, too, having to completely rebuild the program. Because of Krystkowiak's success, I've gotta think Whittingham will be under the microscope this season. The former has shown he can get it done in the Pac-12, and Whittingham hasn't yet. If he can't do it in 2014, his days with the Utes ought to be numbered. r.mcdonald@chronicle.utah.edu Tuesday, April 8, 2014 SOFTBALL Continued from page 6 probably the most improved I have ever seen anyone get," Nieto said. Despite not pitching nearly as often as Nieto and Cordova, Hogue claims that all three pitchers, and the rest of the pitching staff, are important to the team's success. "We need both of them, we need our entire line up," Hogue said. "We have so much talent. I'm just the lucky one that has the opportunity to try to figure out how to play everyone in and get the most out of everyone and try to get a win. We have a lot of tools." d.garcia@chronicle.utah.edu University Location 222 S. 1300 E. • 582-7200 Also at: 7800 S. State • 255-5900 |
