Todd's a pretty regular guy and has quite a bit in common with Scott. They both play the bass guitar. They both have the same taste in women (literally). Unlike Scott, though, Todd has special powers granted to him through years of study and training, because unlike Scott, Todd is a vegan. And like Envy says, the short answer is, "vegans are just better than everyone else." I feel kind of like a real life Scott Pilgrim, because just recently I had a metaphorical battle against vegan powers to win the girl. I am a self-proclaimed carnivore. As a representative of the great state of Idaho, I was literally raised on meat and potatoes. But Monday night I had the chance to become vegan for a short time, a challenge I both feared and eagerly looked forward to. Just to clear up any questions before we begin, I didn't get super powers. That came later with the schnapps. This is my story, my tale of a meat eater who ventured bravely into the unknown realms of meatlessness. The Vertical Diner is a small establishment off of West Temple that also happens to be the setting of this story. I was there with my date after having seen a stunning rendition of "Les Miserables" at the Hale Centre Theatre. The only thing I knew was that this diner was vegan-friendly — so much so that their menu claimed all of the food to have been "prepared using ioo percent plant-based ingredients," even though the menu contained such items as cheeseburgers, a sandwich so non-vegan that even its name is offensive to veganism. It even kind of looked like a burger, but less so than the other vegan substitutes. The problem I had, though, was that it wasn't a burger. It was close. It wasn't good like a burger, but it was close. Overall, though, the burrito was pretty dang tasty. As I sat there chewing my last bites, I realized how amazing it was that people could craft a burrito-like object using just plants. Those weird green things that grow in the dirt could be used to imitate all of those animalbased foods people enjoy, and the imitations were mostly very good. And as I thought, I wondered what else we could make with only plants, and how those things would taste. And I wondered for a moment whether the slight decrease in taste could be made up for with familiarity, and whether it might be worth giving up meat as a person and maybe even as a society. In the end though, having my first official vegan meal was a success, despite my carnivorous tendencies. I was vegan for a few hours and I liked it. Maybe I'll try for a few days next time, and who knows where that will go. g.leman@chronicle.utah.edu Aries (March 21-April 19) You'll be feisty and might want to push back, which could cause someone to cop an attitude. Sure, I knew about tofu and dairy-free cheese, but the menu listed tofu as a separate item from other meats. I could get chicken, hamburger or tofu in my meal. I believed the claim that all of the food was plant-based, but I wasn't sure how. Even my date, a vegetarian, wasn't quite sure about the chicken. So I went with my gut and ordered a burrito with beans, rice, cheese, Boca Burger, red tomato sauce, sour cream and tortilla chips. When the food arrived a short time later, my meat-eater senses began to tingle. The cheese looked wrong. The sour cream looked wrong. The protein was a strange orange color. It smelled like a burrito, though, so I dove in. The first thing I noticed was that it tasted like a burrito. This shouldn't be surprising, but somehow it was. I didn't really know what to expect, but beans and rice can only taste so many ways. So I continued eating. The cheese-sauce tasted mostly like cheese, and was good. The sour cream did its job and enhanced the other flavors of the burrito, and that was good, too. The part I was most set off by was the Boca Burger.
