Show fridaymagazine Dear Penelope, How would you say the majority of college-aged women look upon a guy who is going into a field of work that probably won't make a ton of money? Is that guy less dateable in the minds of many women? From a Friend ADVERTISING :801.581.7041 NEWS : 801.581. NEWS FAX : 801.581. FAXX — EDITOR IN CHIEF: Emily Andrews e.andrews@chronicle.utah.edu MANAGING EDITOR: Niki Harris n.harris@chronicle.utah.edu PRODUCTION MANAGER : Grey Leman g.leman@chronicle.utah.edu My Dear Friend, When I was in kindergarten, I kissed a boy named Spencer, then promptly ran and hid in the coat closet. The rush of adrenaline came to an abrupt halt when my teacher found me huddled among the jackets and said, "Save your kisses for mama, OK?" I was offended that Spencer didn't like my kisses and embarrassed that Mrs. Larsen knew what I had done. But in that moment I wasn't thinking, "I hope Spencer grows up to be a successful lawyer/doctor/CEO and that we're happy and I never have to work a day in my life:' I just wanted to kiss him. The same can be said for many college girls. They just want to kiss guys. And although I never went through a self-proclaimed "slutty stage" like my roommate (where any guy would do), I found it didn't really matter what the guys I dated wanted to do for the rest their life. What mattered was whether or not they had ambition. When a guy has drive and an actual plan for his life, it makes him more attractive than someone who can't even answer the question, "So, what would you like to do after ASST. If you can answer with the utmost confidence and say what you want to do and your plan on how to achieve it, what you want to do and how much you make doesn't even matter. It's the principle. Is this person someone who wants to go somewhere in life? Even if it doesn't pay as much as other jobs, the fact that you have an end goal is admirable. Continue to follow your heart and do what you want for the rest of your life, even if you don't make a lot. Don't compromise your happiness for the opinion of others. And above all, don't allow yourself to be fooled by the idea that money is the only thing people want out of a relationship. There are plenty of other things that can be brought to the table: companionship, a sense of humor, and a positive attitude, to name a few. Above all, just be yourself and know that the person you end up with will love you for more than how much you make — they'll love you for you. There is this amazing group on campus called Engineering Without Borders that I will be going with from SaturdayTuesday to Lake Powell-ish area to work on a project in Navajo Nation. Not only will we have a great time, but more importantly we will be building houses for people on the Navajo reservation. It's a great opportunity, and anyone can join in, so mark your calendars for next year! NATHAN TURNER LIZI ZACHARY NIKI HARRIS STAFF WRITER COLUMNIST MANAGING EDITOR Homework, homework, and more homework. Sadly, instead of going to Florida for Spring Break like my wife and I planned, we will stay in SLC so I can catch up and study for my philosophy and econ classes that have been beating me up all semester. If we're lucky we will get to the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit at the Leonardo. That's only if we're lucky. I'm going with my friend to Wisconsin. It'll be in the lOs and 20s, degree-wise, so it'll be kind of like going back in time a month or so. We're also going to drive to Chicago to see Fermilab and eat lots of lovely Wisconsin cheese. I'm going to Cancun for a week of sand, sunshine, sangria, and happiness. Basically, it's been eight months or so since I've been knee-deep in gorgeous ocean water, and I'm highly overdue. I don't know why I live in Utah, really. Because I can't stand the cold. So I'm escaping. Plus, it's my first time going to Mexico, and I fully intend to make it wild and fantastic. And to finally get some quality alone time with my books. |
