Show fridaymagazine Dear Penelope, Yesterday I lost my keys, and then my phone. And today, I lost my marbles. It's difficult to prioritize and keep organized. Items on my to-do list keep piling up, and I have lost the motivation to take care of them. How do I get my life back on track? Sincerely, Unmotivated in Utah ADVERTISING :801.581.7041 NEWS: 801.581. And while it can be difficult to regain control of your life, there are a few simple things that can make your to-do list a little shorter. One thing that has helped me prioritize and keep organized is my planner. An actual, real-life monthly planner. When you write down tasks you have to do daily and check items off that list throughout the day, not only will you feel satisfied by the progress you see happening, you will remember the things you have to do easier. Check to make sure you have the items that are necessary for day-to-day survival (keys, wallet, phone) before you leave anywhere. Every single time. It is your new mantra. Keys. Wallet. Phone. As for your motivation, no one can change that except yourself, honey. The only way you'll want to continue chugging through that to-do list that seems overwhelming is if you can visualize the end result, and you want that more than what you currently have. If life seems a little overwhelming, as life sometimes can be, take a break. Reorganize your room, your living space, your kitchen. Clean out old papers and clutter that is messing up your space. Get rid of those T-shirts you never wear and those papers you wrote in third grade. Get a head start on spring cleaning. I've found that when you clear the place you inhabit, you also clear your mind. And when your mind is clear, it makes it that much easier to focus on what you need to, therefore allowing your life to be back on track. If cleaning isn't going to help or you are already neat and tidy (kudos to you), then take a break a different way. Remove yourself from the routine of everyday life. Do something you wouldn't usually do. Go to that movie you keep meaning to see. Go somewhere you have wanted to eat at but haven't had the time. Make time. Be a tourist in your own town. Or, if possible, go out of town. Even if it's just for the weekend. You'd be surprised by how much better you feel by distancing yourself just enough from the tedious every day tasks you are required to do. In the end, you'll be able to accomplish the things you need to, and the satisfaction of being successful will make the stress worth it. Every Saturday, I'm trapped in a room with people I don't connect with. And when the day finally ends, I don't get a one-time romance — and diamond earring — or a new look. No, I don't get to be the Prom Queen, Criminal, Basket Case, or Jock. I am the Geek. I am the one who ends up alone and who gets stuck finishing everyone's homework. EMILY JUCHAU COPY EDITOR "The Goonies." First, Emily refers to herself in the third person, like Data (the inventor kid). My roommate also makes me do the Truffle Shuffle whenever I enter our apartment, and on the weekends we hunt for pirate treasure. I also really relate to that scene where the Fratellis threaten Chunk by putting his hand in the blender, and he confesses to every prank he's ever pulled. But most of all, Emily's a Goonie, and Goonies never say die. COLBY PATTERSON DIGITAL EDITOR "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back:' Specifically the character of Luke Skywalker. After last semester, I felt like I had destroyed the Death Star and defeated the Empire. But then Spring Semester started, and the Empire struck back with a vengeance. Luckily, just like Luke, I have people who are helping me discover my true potential. I just wish I had a mentor who talked likeYoda. FORREST RHINEHART am COPY EDITOR "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." My life basically consists of spontaneous musical numbers, skipping class, breaking the fourth wall, and talking to an imaginary camera. I also have a best friend named Kamryn, who is pretty much the embodiment of Cameron Frye, from the clothes to the anxiety to the rockin' haircut and facial expressions. To top it all off, I once crashed a Ferrari. |
