Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Tuesday, February 18, 2014 7 BASKETBALL SOFTBALL Continued from page 6 Utes show strong defense in Easton Desert Classic Dominic Garcia STAFF WRITER Utah's defense took a turn for the better last weekend at the Easton Desert Classic in Las Vegas. After giving up 33 runs in the opening weekend en route to a 2-3 start, the Utes surrendered 21 runs in Las Vegas and went 4-I. They scored 39 runs. "Getting four wins is a good weekend," said Utah head coach Amy Hogue. Hogue's main focuses in the days leading up to the Classic were pitching and defense, and that work paid off quickly. The Utes kept their opponents to only three runs each in each of the first three games, and in the fourth against Seattle, the Redhawks were only able to get one runner across home plate. "Good pitching and defense got us those wins," Hogue said. "We made as many mistakes as last weekend, but they weren't as costly." On the mound, freshman Sammy Cordova recorded the first two wins of her career in Friday's doubleheader. She threw five innings against Toledo to start things off and a complete game against UTEP. She tallied seven strikeouts in the two contests. "It felt pretty good to get the wins," Cordova said. "But they are more wins for the team, not me." On Saturday, sophomore Kayce Nieto picked up where BASEBALL Continued from page 6 Kayce Nieto pitches during last season's game against UCLA. Cordova left off on the bump. She was responsible for giving up just one run on five hits with three strikeouts as Utah beat Long Beach State and Seattle in convincing fashion, 11-3 and 9-I. As well as the Utes played on the first two days of the weekend, that success came crashing down Sunday against Hawaii as the Wahine produced II runs on 14 hits. Nieto allowed nine of Hawaii's runs and Cordova gave up two. "Hawaii are great hitters," Hogue said. "We can't give a chance to a great hitting team like that." Despite going into the bottom of the seventh down 11-4, Utah tried to rally as junior Marissa Mendenhall hit a three-run home run to put the Utes within four. The home run wasn't enough to spark a complete comeback though, as Utah couldn't produce any more scores. "We left the ball up a little bit," Cordova said. "We didn't get as many ground balls as we should have." While good pitching and defense were the most encouraging things to happen for the Utes over the weekend, their bats continued to stay hot, too. The team hit three home runs against Toledo on Friday and two against Long Beach State on Saturday. Freshman Hannah Flippen hit one against Seattle and another against Hawaii. "I thought 36 runs in five games — how do we improve on that? And we did," Hogue said, comparing the Utes' opening weekend to last weekend. "We have three freshmen already in the double digits with RBIs, so we are producing runs." Despite an improved defensive performance in Las Vegas, Hogue would still like to work more in that department so her team can become more consistent. In addition, she is also hoping the two weeks Utah will have off before it plays at the San Diego Classic will help some players get healthy. "We have too many things that are keeping our players off the field," Hogue said. "It would be nice to have a full roster in San Diego." d.garcia@chronicle.utah. rmir JOB POSTING MINK GROUP LEADERS (10.15 kids) for SLC School District After School program r 19.5 hrs/wk; M-TH 2:30.5:30/6pm and Fridays 12:30-5:30/6pm. "The one thing I thought we did better today than we have all weekend was that we swung the bats really well," Kinneberg said in a press release. "We only had eight hits, but we hit the ball hard and that was a good sign." Overall, Kinneberg said he was pleased with how his team's season began. "We got a feel for the game a little bit this weekend. We played a solid team in Sacramento State," Kinneberg said. "But our pitching was really good for four games, and that's a real positive sign for us." Utah will head off to Arizona this weekend for the Pac-I2 vs. Big Ten Tournament. b.barlow@chronicle.utah.edu ±1 - up three hits." Game three saw more offense and late drama. With the Utes down 4-3 in the eighth inning, sophomore AJ Young drove Tyler Yagi home, evening the score. Sacramento State came through in the clutch, though, scoring in the bottom of the ninth to win and take a 2-I advantage on the weekend. Young drove in three of Utah's runs for the game. The final game of the set was a great way to end the trip for the Utes. Even as the Hornets took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Utah battled back and took a 3-2 lead in the second and then tacked on two more scores in the sixth. Sacramento State cut the lead to 5-4 but couldn't muster quite enough of a for her 12th double-double of the season. During the game, Plouffe became Utah's all time leading rebounder and also moved into fourth place on the school's all-time scoring list. "I definitely would have traded [the accolades] for a win," Plouffe said. "Not that I do not want to be on those lists, but I like to win more than I like awards." Utah actually held a seven-point lead midway through the second half, but its defense began to give out as Jazmine Davis and Kelsey Plum brought the Huskies back. Washington took the lead with 5:27 remaining. Down the stretch, Davis and Plum carried the Huskies to victory. 0) "Mitch [Watrous] and Dylan [Drachler] pitched very well. It was just a simple baseball game today." Game two got Utah back on its feet, largely thanks to Tanner Banks, who went wild and struck out nine batters over seven innings. Zach Adams and Nick Green pitched the rest of the way to preserve the Ute victory. Utah gave up just three hits on the contest. "Tanner was efficient today, he didn't give in and just pounded the strike zone," Kinneberg said in a press release. "He was really good today. All three of our pitchers pitched well, only giving ERIN BURNS/The Daily Utah Chronicle "We gave them buckets on defense and we could not afford to give those to them," Plouffe said. "We gave them easy baskets and put them on the line again. When they score and when the clock stops, that is hard to come back from." Plouffe was the only Ute to finish in double figures. Ciera Dunbar scored nine points and junior Cheyenne Wilson finished with eight. Rodriguez and freshman Emily Potter combined for just 13. Up next for Utah is a road trip to take on the Arizona schools this week. The Utes will play the Arizona Wildcats on Friday and Arizona State on Sunday. "We've got to find a way to win these ones," Levrets said. Friday's contest will begin at 7 p.m. MT.
