The Olympics always carry the best memories for me, and I don't think that's just because I've been involved in sports basically since I was able to walk. I remember being a wee 10-yearold wide-eyed little girl when Salt Lake City hosted the Games in 2002, watching the torch being lit at the Opening Ceremony and having no idea how fantastic that moment was. My mom was volunteering at the airport throughout the Olympics and got all the swanky swag that came with it: Olympic jacket, snowpants, headband, gloves, the works. That's also probably how we ended up with a signed photograph of the entire United States speed skating team, come to think of it. We got to go to the Finland vs. Sweden hockey game, some sort of nordic skiing event (I wasn't thrilled by that one) and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. And it wasn't just the actual events that made February 2002 unbelievable. My mom and I won tickets to see Smash Mouth and Brooks and Dunn in concert, performers who wouldn't have been present were it not for the Olympics, and to have that as a firstconcert memory is pretty rad. I was freezing cold, but hey, music and hot chocolate were provided, so I was a happy camper. But that's why I'm so jazzed about the upcoming games. True, they're not in Salt Lake this year, but there's a special sort of magic that surrounds the Olympics. It doesn't even matter whether it's the Summer Games or the Winter Games, in my hometown or across the sea: I love them all. n.harris@chronicle.utah.edu Object in the right hand of the Doorstep item 36 " Larry Bird, during his playing days be an honor" 30 21 Gaseous prefix eame Battleship 47 Aries (March 21-April 19) The Full Moon could affect your mood. You might want to exercise your "kiss and make up" technique. My teacher, Mrs. Wright, kept telling us this was going to mean far more to us later on in life than listening to a recording of Ray Bradbury's terrifying short stories, which were playing in the background nonetheless. I recently found this scrapbook of mine amid the piles and piles of memorabilia from my grade school years, and I was utterly enthralled with the memories I'd chosen to gluestick to my construction paper booklet. In particular, I was obsessed with the scandal surrounding Canadian figure skating pair Jamie Sale and David Pelletier, and was rather vehemently on their side (even as a child, I projected all my emotions loudly and robustly). This was exaggerated two pages later in the scrapbook when it came out Taurus (April 20-May 20) Consider opening up to new possibilities that emerge in discussions. You might be quite surprised by what occurs. 40 42 3 maker 4 29 Men's basketball v. One of my friends actually won the contest to design Salt Lake City's Olympic logo, which was emblazoned everywhere we went — a pretty sweet deal for a io-year-old, if you think about it. As previously mentioned, my mom got to meet all kinds of athletes from all over the world, and the stories she would tell me and my little brother when she got home were out-of-this-world amazing, particularly when she fangirled after meeting Apolo Anton Ohno.
