N.C. Utah @ Lexus Classic All Day Fresno, Calif. Matt Ellis Swimming & Diving Traveling a mere a 45 miles south to Provo on Friday night was probably the Utes' best chance this season at a strong road score, and they knew it. Utah came out firing and held a lead of 1.15 over North Carolina State after the first rotation. They eventually edged BYU as well, taking first in the meet with a 197.125. BYU was second with a 195.500 and NC State took third, scoring a 194.675. The Utes' score was their highest road mark since 2009 and will help their regional qualifying score, which will be used to seed them for the regional competition. But co-head coach Greg Marsden thinks the high score will be important to his team for reasons beyond just the numbers. "We've got to be able to compete well away from our place if we want to do well in the end," he said, referring to the fact that Utah will not be hosting a postseason meet this year. For the first time this season the Utes started on beam, where they have struggled lately. But they didn't seem fazed by it as they put down their second-highest score of the year, a 49.05o. It was the highest they had scored on the event since Jan. 19. After the first rotation, Utah led BYU by .05 and NC State was already fading into the rearview after putting up a 47.9. Utah never trailed in the meet and only added to its lead after scoring a 49.325 on floor in the second rotation. Lia Del Priore scored a 9.9, which followed up the perfect io she earned last week at home. "It's just been getting a couple routines under my belt, getting that confidence," she said. "Those first couple routines that you do in a season, it's really intimidating. Finally, now I'm just comfortable and I don't even think about what I'm doing." The Utes then went to vault in the third rotation, their strongest event. BYU had its worst event of the night on beam in the third rotation as the Cougars had to count two 9.5s and ended up with a 48.45o. Meanwhile, Utah got a career-high 9.925 from Nansy Damianova. Georgia Dabritz then matched that score before Tory Wilson earned her eighth straight vault title with a 9.95. She is undefeated on the season. "She wasn't in our lineup last year and it really frustrated her," Marsden said of Damianova. "She worked very hard in the preseason and has continued to work hard. Landings have always been difficult for her, and she nailed it tonight." STAFF WRITER Utah @ Men's Championships All Day Federal Way, Wash. MEN'S BASKETBALL WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Cardinal pulverizes Utah once again Utah snags final victory over Ducks Ryan McDonald ASST. SPORTS EDITOR Sometimes games aren't as much about the opponent's overall talent level as they are about matchups. Sitting in the middle of the Pac-12 standings, no team in the conference has given the Runnin' Utes as many matchup problems as the Stanford Cardinal. Utah followed up a 31-point home loss to Stanford on Jan. 27 by falling to the Cardinal once again Sunday afternoon, this time losing 84-66 in Palo Alto, Calif. Surrendering a Pac-12-best 62.2 points per game entering the matinee, the Utes allowed Stanford to average nearly 86 points in two contests against them this season. From guards who were able to shoot over the top of Utah defenders to athletic big man Dwight Powell dominating inside, Utah rarely had an answer for the Cardinal in either matchup. On Sunday, guard Chasson Randle led the Cardinal with 22 points and Powell added 15 to go along with eight rebounds and four assists. Even senior Gabriel Harris, who was averaging just two points per game coming in, scored 14 in his final home game at Maples Pavilion. Jarred DuBois scored 22 for Utah in the loss. Utah assistant coach Andy Hill said after the game that it's the versatility of Stanford's big men that has caused the problems for the Utes, as that opens up the Cardinal offense. See CARDINAL page 10 Michael Smith STAFF WRITER STEFFI LIETZKE/The Daily Utah Chronicle Jarred DuBois shoots past three Arizona players Feb. 17. Dubois had a team-high 22 points in Utah's 6684 loss against Stanford on Sunday. She wanted to make it count, especially after how the weekend started. Iwalani Rodrigues, who was playing in her last regular season game in a Utah uniform, scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Utes to a 70-52 victory over Oregon on Sunday. Two days earlier, she had her worst shooting performance of the season in their loss to Oregon State. "I concentrated more," Rodrigues said of her performance on Sunday. She said she wanted to leave it all on the floor because it was her last regular season game as a Ute. The win sealed Utah's No. 6 seed in this week's Pac-12 Conference Tournament. Utah will open up with a game against No. 11-seeded Arizona. The Utes (17-12, 8-io Pac-12) jumped on the Ducks early, opening up a 15-6 lead just minutes in, and stretched their lead to 16 at the half, 41-25. The Utes held strong in the second half, leading by as many as 22 points before coasting to the i8-point victory. "We wanted to kill them," Rodrigues said. She also said that they played with a lot more energy in the second half compared to Friday, which allowed them to win easily. See DUCKS page 8 |
