Dynamic duo Dalton and Dallas Carroll are identical twins who have always been teammates and will continue to play together for the foreseeable future at the U. The Carroll twins are looking to dominate the stat sheet at the college level in the same way that they did in high school. In their senior seasons at Taylorsville, they ranked No. 1 and No. 2 for their team in batting average, hits, runs, doubles, triples and home runs. They were the fastest guys on the team, too. Dallas had 13 stolen bases and Dalton had 17, while the next closest teammate had five. They owned the mound as well. Dalton was the top pitcher his senior year with an ERA of LH in 57 innings pitched with a team-high 58 Ks. Dallas ranked third on Taylorsville pitching staff with a 2.74 ERA in 46 innings of work on his way to strik- ing out 3o batters. As young as the 2013 season is, they've both already dug into significant roles on the Utah roster. Dallas has assumed the starting spot at third base, and Dalton is becoming an important part of the Utes' bullpen. Their mother, Pam Dalton, is full of pride and relief that her boys were able to stick together. "I was so worried at the beginning because I thought one would go to one school and one would go to the other," she said. "I was kind of scared to break up that strength that they have together." SPORTS EDITOR With just three weeks remaining in conference play, the Utes find themselves in roughly the same position they were in a year ago. At 3-10 in conference play, they have tied the number of Pac-12 victories they snagged in 2012. Despite the fact Utah has not yet seen improvement in the win-loss department, with five games remaining before the Pac-12 Tournament, players still feel as though this season has been better than last. As the Utes prepare to face Colorado tonight in Boulder, getting a fourth conference win is still foremost on their minds. "We know we've got a more talented team, a more dedicated team to basketball [than last year]," forward Cedric Martin said. "We've put ourselves in position to be into the game to win. We just need to close it out. We still have the heart to know that we're capable of keeping up with these teams." Much of the reason for the continued confidence is the fact that Utah has been competitive in nearly every conference game. Besides their three Pac-12 wins, four of the Utes' conference losses came down to the final minutes. They were beaten by more than 15 points seven times in conference play a year ago but have been blown out just three times in 2013. While Martin said there has been improvement, and Utah's play indicates such, head coach Larry Krystkowiak hasn't gotten too excited at the prospect of the Utes winning a fourth conference game. "To me, four games over three games the year before isn't really that much of an accomplishment, so I wouldn't be tootin' our horn with that one either," Krystkowiak said. "They've always been really in tune with each other," Pam Dalton said. "Being on the same team actually makes them work harder. Everything's a competition between those two." That competitive fire is in their genes. From a young age, their grandfather, Lyle Petersen, was a constant supporter. He played football for the U in the late 195os and always dreamed of his grandsons becoming Utes, though not necessarily as baseball players.
