Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 8 Thursday, January 24, 2013 MEN'S TENNIS Swinging strong, prepped to meet MT Connor Wallace STAFF WRITER JONATHAN ROYCE/The Daily Utah Chronicle Senior Dmytro Mamedov assisted the Utes' overall 6-1 win over Idaho State with his own 7-5, 6-1 singles win. This past Saturday, the Utes started their season with two wins against Weber State and Idaho State. The score in both matches was 6-1, with the one point for the opposing teams coming off doubles wins. In tennis, one point comes from the winner of two out of three doubles matches. The remainder of the points is won in singles matches. The Utes were undefeated in singles play. "The doubles is sure going to be a point of emphasis," said assistant coach Roeland Brateanu. "We're playing around with the doubles teams to see what's best for the team in the long run." Although the Utes lost both points in doubles play on Saturday, junior Devin Lane and sophomore Slim Hamza were able win their matches 8-2 against Weber State and 8-3 against Idaho State. "Slim [Hamza] and Devin [Lane] have played together for a year now," Brateanu said. "They're starting their second year together. They know what to expect from each other, and they're a great fit. We expect great things from them." Hamza was impressive in the season opening matches, so much so he was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week. "This is the first time ever that a Ute [tennis player] has gotten Pac-12 Player of the Week," Hamza said. "I'm so happy about it." Other than netting two wins in doubles play, Hamza also won all of his singles matches in convincing fashion. Hamza beat both of his opponents 6-4, 6-2. Currently, Hamza is the highest-ranked Utah player at No. 52, and he has high hopes for himself for the rest of the season. "I'm going to do my best to improve and be ranked higher," Hamza said. "Why not in the Top io? The coaches are really helping me out and my teammates are encouraging me." Utah's next opponent is Montana. The Grizzlies have played two matches already and lost both to No. 38 Boise State and Air Force. The Utes beat Montana in 2012, 5-2, with all points coming from singles play. Despite Montana's losing record this season, Brateanu believes Montana is much better than its record indicates. "I think this will be a pretty tough match," Brateanu said. "We need to prepare for a tough match, and I think the guys are doing that thus far." Hamza said he is more focused on Utah than on Montana. "Fight for your teammates and the guys playing next to you, and it doesn't matter if it is a good team or not because we're going to play the same every time," Hamza said. The match against Montana will begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Eccles Tennis Center. c.wallace@ chronicle.utah.edu Twitter: @ConnorRWallace TRACK&FIELD Runners finish strong in Idaho Chad Mobley STAFF WRITER 1 111 r UTAH CHRONICLE ‘4 SUMMIT ENTER FOR THE CHANCE TO WIN AN ADMIT TWO PASS TO THE SPECIAL ADVANCE SCREENING OF . Their 5-o conference start includes wins over No. 6 Arizona and UCLA, the two teams many argued were the best in the conference. Oregon's only bad loss was a triple-overtime defeat to UTEP. Other than that, the Ducks' tournament case is quite clean. Also notching a third-place finish in the high jump was Langley Iverson, who was competing in her first meet since sustaining a season-ending injury in 2011. Kailey Hansen finished just above Iverson in second place with a leap of 5-3.00 feet. It was Hansen's first collegiate meet in her freshman year. The sec- and-place finish was great, but Kepler is confident his jumpers can go higher. "I thought [Hansen] did a good job," Kepler said. "[Hansen and Iverson] certainly want to jump a lot higher, and they will. At practice, they're both jumping and the bar is at about 5-8.0o." The Utes rounded out the been winning is as impressive as their record. Oregon is second in the conference in scoring, yet their leading scorer Damyean Dotson averages fewer than 12 points per game. Oregon's trick is incredible depth. The Ducks have io players who receive consistent minutes, and all five starters average more than io points per game. Their defense is stout, too, leading to Oregon outscoring opponents by an average of 14 points per game. Oregon's success is shocking until you take a closer look at this stealth team. The Ducks won more than 20 games in head coach Dana Altman's first two seasons in Eugene, and Oregon is just four wins away from 20 already this year. The Ducks went 13-5 in conference play a year ago, yet few mentioned them as a contender entering the 20122013 season. Cynthia Sanchez claimed the top spot on her final weight throw attempt. Head coach Kyle Kepler expected to have a good showing from Sanchez, but he was proud of her poise in the face of adversity. "Certainly not a surprise," Kepler said. "She had a chance to step up on her very last throw. The girl that finished second actually was ahead of her until the final throw of the meet. More pertinent than the distance and her actually winning was just her responding under that kind of pressure. That's always something, as coaches, we look for." Nikkie Rudder and Candus Ford claimed second and third in shot put. "We have a strong group in our throwers," Kepler said. "Those guys are going to have a chance to win or place high in just about every competition they're in." The Utes had a strong presence in jumping competition as well. This will be the first meet in which Utah will compete in all track and field events as the long-distance runners make their debut. They will only face two Division I opponents, and Kepler said it is a great way to continue to prepare for the bigger meets. "We don't want a high-powered meet yet," Kepler said. "We want to make sure we're running well. It's kind of an ideal meet." c.mobley@chronicle.utah.edu Twitter: @Chad Mobley conference frontrunners. The football team has maintained its success through incredible depth, giving them the ability to quickly plug in skilled players when an injury occurs or a player graduates. It looks like the Ducks' basketball team is following a similar lead. If the Ducks were to lose a starter, there are plenty of capable players waiting in the wings. Oregon's run should have been predicted after they hired Altman. He's been one of the best basketball coaches throughout the last two decades, building Kansas State and Creighton into the solid programs they are today. No other team was able to pry Altman, a Nebraska native, from Creighton, but he finally left to the tune of a $14 million contract at Oregon. Within a year of hiring Altman, Oregon opened up the Matthew Knight Arena, a palace of a college basketball gym. Combine a great coaching hire with an infusion of cash that produces the conference's most modern facilities, and you're bound to see success. This is the exact path Oregon took. Low and behold, the wins are following. Most schools couldn't dream of such fortune. Having Nike founder Phil Knight as a primary booster led to the construction of the Matt, as the arena is called, and likely a large portion of Altman's salary. Oregon, of course, has Knight and the fortune that comes with him, so it appears the Pac-12's richest will keep getting richer. j.bullinger@chronicle.utah.edu Twitter: @jakebullinger |
