Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 4 HOLIDAY continued from Page 1 students about the decorations. The posters cover all holidays celebrated in the winter months, such as the Buddhist's Bodhi Day, which celebrates the day Buddha achieved enlightenment, and the Islamic celebration of Ramadan, a month-long remembrance of the war fought by the Maccabes in ancient times. There are several different holidays for the winter solstice, such as the Iranian holiday of Shab-e Yalda, or the Wiccans' Yule celebra- AVALANCHES continued from Page 1 roughly four fatalities each year, from skiers, snowmobilers, snowshoers and people in out-of-bounds ski areas," he said. Hardesty said checking the avalanche conditions before heading into the mountains is important. "Know before you go," Hardesty said. "Always check the current avalanche conditions each morning." Tracking the weather, following the rate of snow melt and gathering snow samples are all factors in producing an avalanche forecast every day. The UAC takes this job seriously, but it is not a simple equation for its forecasters to plug in numbers and get an accurate forecast. "There's so much that goes tion. The posters include information on the history of the holiday and the way the holiday is celebrated. Justin Narusis, a sophomore in psychology at Salt Lake Community College looking to transfer to the U, admired the decorations as he visited campus. He said he appreciated the diversity and information of the signs and said it "balanced out" the Christmas tree. "It was fascinating to read," he said. "I liked learning about holidays I've never heard of, like the Iranian and Navajo holidays." c.webber@ chronicle.utah.edu into avalanche forecasting. It's not a very black-andwhite answer as far as being able to take a class and being an expert," said David Kelly, an avalanche course instructor at the U. "It comes with taking classes, having an education and gaining experience and traveling with people that have more experience." Although students might take courses to help prepare themselves for the slopes, Kelly cautions those who think they have it under control. "At no point does anybody have enough of a handle on it to write themselves off as an expert," Kelly said. The United States counted 34 avalanche fatalities during the 2011-2012 season. There have not been recorded fatalities for the 2012-2013 season. .01:040E, ARCHITECTURE .0 10.5.3r .1:10-ar•O °VP000 •••-- ON _■ 0100.r•Wila■ dirag".:11. 110. ■01 1111 continued from Page 1 °I% slis s■ 1%0 al:COSire ......... •■•■■1 00101110 with Steve and he would tell us what machines he was going to throw away in the near future, and we would mark them," Tranter said. Later on, they returned to cut the needed panels off the marked pieces. Tranter said the experience of seeing their design come to life was incredible. "I've taken many days off work to go there and physically work," he said. "I've been a part of all of it." For Tranter, the best part was seeing the design become reality — but it wasn't easy. The duo dealt with an onslaught of challenges, from water damage in the old masonry to finding the right bolts to screw the steel panels into the brick. The experience taught them what it is like to bring a creation to life, and how much is involved in bringing a plan from the drawing board to the street. "We had to coordinate it between so many different parties that it got pretty tough at times," he said. Tranter said architecture isn't as easy as just drawing a design. "It's so interesting, because in school we do so many designs that are just on paper, and that's essentially how far they go," he said. "There was a time when I got very nervous because I realized this is real. We're dealing with real people and real money. You can't go back." m.clark@ chronicle.utah.edu bailypeal ► Tuesday, November 27, 2012 now • •■ ••-■ 01.710."TMOVIONI ::+o or.graw• `"`""".■ ••• "Sws° as —woman 001. 0111111 ■. MEM ...........
