Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Friday, August 24, 2012 BENNION continued from Page 1 as shampoo and toothpaste to donate to the Utah AIDS Foundation. "We haven't done a ton with the Utah AIDS Foundation yet, but we are also doing a project for them on the Day of Service," Holmes said. "We are really looking forward to developing a partnership and doing a lot more with them in the future." Spencer Ogden, a sophomore in civil engineering, recently began volunteering with the Bennion Center to help high school students study for the ACT. "This program is so cool to be involved in," Ogden said. "It's something that not only looks good on your résumé, but that makes you feel good too." Kelsi Foutz, a senior in accounting, looks forward to continuing her association with the Bennion Center as a student director for the English Skills Learning Center. She loves helping immigrants learn English and watching them progress with the language. "It's great to see people improve and eventually become citizens," she said. The Bennion Center, located in the Union, offers a variety of volunteer opportunities, from regular opportunities to teach and read with children to drop-in service, such as knitting hats for newborns. Holmes said the variety of service options is what she loves most about the center. "We think, 'I like helping kids, I like helping animals, I care about the environment,'" she said. "The Bennion Center is a place where you can do all of that." Max Wood, a junior in electrical engineering, started off the formal part of the evening, in which speakers encouraged the students to get on the path to living lives of service. "I'm just excited to get more people involved in service," he said. "The Bennion Center is kind of tucked away in the Union, and sometimes I think students don't realize it's there." Along with dinner, students received information on upcoming service opportunities available through the Bennion Center. They were briefed on the Legacy of Lowell Day of Service on Sept. 8. The giant service project will kick off Homecoming Week with more than I,000 volunteers expected to help out. RUSH WEEK continued from Page 1 and we're just hoping to talk to recruits as much as possible. Obviously, we'll be playing with notreal money." The house itself is a big stepup, Foote said. Last semester, the fraternity relied on temporary housing as it started up after its two-year suspension. The newly revamped Beta house re-opened Aug. i6. "We're hoping to use the house as a tool for potential members to get to know us," Foote said. Beta Theta Pi has already given out seven bids and is hoping to give out between 3o and 4o more during the week. Greek houses give out bids to new recruits as part of their selection process. Beyond that, the fraternity is planning for a year of involvement. "We're an academic institution," Foote said. "We really want guys with high goals and aspirations for their lives. We'll give them a chance to make a difference in a number of ways this year." The Panhellenic Council is hoping for 30o new pledges this fall, and the Interfraternity Council is aiming for about i6o. Both rushes will wrap up the week with invitation dinners, during which prospective members and the organizations will finalize their bids. "It's a mutual selection process," Schmauch said. He will look at the invites on Wednesday night and try to match guys to the houses they ranked highest, he said. "I've been here since sophomore year, and this will be my fourth year," Hansen said. "I have met so many people through Greek life that I never would have been able to meet otherwise, and that's how I got really involved." She encourages students to be themselves during rush week. "So many girls worry," she said. "They wonder: What is the right outfit? How should I act? Just be you. This week is to help you decide where you will work and fit best, so don't put up a front." a.drysdale@chronicle.utah.edu a.drysdale@chronicle.utah.edu Just give me your honest opinion. letters@chroniele.utah.edu Id •, 4 INTERNS AND DJs WANTED!
