I have never seen so many spiders around the valley, and I grew up here. I go hiking about once a week, and one of my favorite places to go is the foothills behind the U, which, to my chagrin, have been overrun by spiders. This isn't just true of the foothills, however — it is true of Salt Lake City. The spiders in the foothills are grass spiders, members of the funnel web spider and a sibling of the notorious hobo spider. Now I do not suffer from arachnophobia, but seeing a field covered with spider webs freaks me out. Dozens of webs littering the grass along the trail will send anyone in the other direction — and fast. This many spiders must mean something, but what? This summer has been a hot, dry one for Utah, with our state experiencing record-breaking temperatures. So it is clear that the high heat has caused an epidemic of spiders this summer in Utah. Beware — this could be a new norm. A recent study by climatologist James Hansen shows that summers have been increasingly warmer in the past so years. However, because this study is not for a geographical region or area, I went to the National Oce- anic and Atmospheric Administration to find the records on Salt Lake City. What I found was disturbing. Out of the seven hottest summers on record, four have been within the past decade. The other three record temperatures occurred in the past half century. If the studies' trends continue, this summer heat is not going to let up anytime soon. So, if you are scared of spiders, here's some advice. Learn about them. Research spiders in general, and particularly the species common to Utah. Because the majority of spiders I have seen — grass spiders —are not poisonous or aggressive, so you can tread lightly around them. My advice is to treat these spiders like anything else. Don't bother them and they won't bother you. Respect them, and hopefully they won't crawl all over you. letters@chronicle.utah.edu Horoscopes No. 0612 Edited by Will Shortz 2 3 4 13 14 17 18 20 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 15 16 21 22 25 Aries (March 21-April 19) How you focus your energy will change substantially.Tonight: A discussion does not need to turn into a fight. 27 Taurus (April 20-May 20) 29 30 32 33 36 37 Your popularity seems to soar.
