Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 10 Wednesday, March 21, 2012 TENNIS Practice helps put Utah over the top McKenzie Dean STAFF WRITER Success has been the name of the game for both Utah tennis teams as of late. The men topped Sacramento State and Air Force last weekend and the women defeated historic rival Brigham Young University. "We have been putting in a lot of effort, spending hours on drills in practice and continue to progress," said men's captain Dmytro Mamedov. The men shut out Sacramento State, netting their fourth 7-0 sweep so far this season. Two days later, the Utes downed former Mountain West Conference opponent Air Force 6-1. Freshmen Slim Hamza and Alejandro Medinilla lead the Utes in singles play. Hamza has won seven in a row, and Medinilla is undefeated at 6-o. One of the biggest challenges on the men's side of the court has been their doubles play. It is something coach F.D. Robbins said his team has been working hard on. "More and more guys on the roster are seeing how important doubles play is to our game and how much of a decider it is to which team gets the W," Mamedov said. "We've seen much improvement on it after all the hours we have put in." The team will travel to Idaho for the Boise State Classic on Friday. The Utes are slated to face No. 73 University of Alabama at Birming- ham in the first round of the eight-team tournament. Just like the men, the women's hard work has been playing in their favor. The women are 8-5 after defeating BYU 5-2. They are 33rd in the nation. Sophomore Callie Craig, a transfer from BYU, paired up with senior Anastasia Putilina to earn the No. I position in doubles. Four out of six Utes defeated Cougar opponents in the singles matches. The women host their Power of Pink match in support of breast cancer at Eccles Tennis Center this weekend. They will take on No. 3 USC and No. I UCLA in Pac-12 action. m.dean@ chronicle.utah.edu VOLUNTEER FORA RESEARCH STUDY Do YOU USE?? AT HOME continued from Page 6 "We're pretty excited about our two wins at USC," junior Connor Eppard said. "We feel like we're starting to come together and form our identity. We want to run with that and take off with that as a team." But baseball momentum, like a recovering economy, can be fickle and easily reversed, meaning the Utes must work to continue to do the things that worked well for them against USC. "There's no secret to keeping it going," Kinneberg said. "Baseball is a funny game — the switch can be turned on and off just as quick as anything. We've just got to keep working, and guys that are struggling have to make some adjustments. The guys that are going good have to recognize why they're going good and keep doing it." Apart from being Utah's first home game, tonight's matchup against Sacramento State (9-II) is also the first of the Utes' seven midweek games this season. Though the games are against nonconference foes and don't count toward Pac-12 standings, the Utes don't plan to take the midweek games lightly. "They're definitely important," Eppard said. "We've got to take those games as The University of Utah's Independent Student Voice Since c1390 ThDaily Utah Chronicle important games heading into the series into the next weekend, trying to get momentum going." Tanner Tripp will get the start on the mound tonight for the Utes, and Sacramento State's starter has yet to be released. Following tonight, the Utes will kick off their series against Oregon on Friday before returning home for a nonconference game against BYU. bubba@ chronicle.utah.edu TO GET HIGH/PARTY RELAX • RELIEVE ANXIETY • STUDY FOR AN EXAM IF SO, YOU MAY QUALIFY FOR A RESEARCH STUDY MULTIPLE OVER NIGHT STAYS MAY BE REQUIRED TRANSPORTATION MAY BE PROVIDED COMPENSATION FOR THOSE WHO QUALIFY CALL LIFETREE CLINICAL RESEARCH 801-269-8200 OR 1-888-927-9898 www.LIFETREERSEARCH.COM LIFETREE CLINICAL RESEARCH® Growing a Better Quality of life 11111.
