I am required to spend 4o hours in an ESL class for my ESL practicum class, and having a respite from my regular schedule meant it was a perfect time to get in a lot of hours. The days were long and started early — 7:45 am. is a shock when you're used to classes at 9:4o am. Immediately I gained a respect for teachers' endurance. Ninety-minute classes are long when you're a student, but being a teacher means preparing and working hard to keep a group of teenagers entertained for an hour and a half. ESL kids are different than most high school students, though. They've lived in the United States for a few years at most, and many have spent the past few years in refugee camps. They come from all around the world. "What do we do when someone's talking?" the teacher prompted. "Listen," answered a student. Another day we did a vocabulary test. I was perplexed as I was correcting because one student defined "senile" as "very cold." Then suddenly I remembered that as a class, we had talked about how old people were often senile, but he must have misheard and thought we said cold people were senile. When I talked to an English speaker after a few hours in my class, it was a shock. It was an exhausting week, but I learned a lot. I had a greater appreciation for life in the United States, and a renewed sense of how difficult it is to learn another language, even if you live among people who speak it. The United States is full of different languages, and even though many people are striving to learn English, it's a challenge. But that doesn't keep teachers from working hard to make learning fun and enjoyable. m.mcfarland@chronicle.utakedu Full horoscopes available online: www.dailyutahchronicle/horoscopes Taurus (April 20-May 20) 26 31 Production Manager Today's Birthday: You could be unusually quiet this year as you become introspective. You are evaluating much in your life.
