Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Tuesday, March 6, 2012 DEGREES continued from Page 1 Communication, which will become Living in the Media World. These updates have been made to make the classes applicable to all the communication areas. Living in the Media World will be broader than the prior Introduction to Mass Communication, which was journalism-focused. "It will facilitate moving students through [school] more quickly and is clearly in line [to employment] in the industry," Avery said. James Anderson, professor of communication, said the change will affect how the major works as well as the entire curriculum. In addition to changing mass communication and speech communication majors, the American Sign Language teaching major has been eliminated from the Department of Communication Science and Disorders as well. The College of Health proposed elimination of the major since enrollment in the program has not been enough to support the faculty, said Patricia Eisenman, associate dean of the College of Health. "In 2001, ASL teaching major was created ... In 2008, we stopped hiring teachers [because enrollment was diminishing]," she said. In addition, the Senate approved the Engineering Department's proposal to offer specific emphasis for mechanical engineering students to pursue. Bruce Gale, a mechanical engineering professor who helped draft the proposal, presented the idea before the Senate. "We have students all the time say 'I would like to specialize in aerospace engineering' and [with the proposal] we can say 'this is the 3 track to do it,' " Gale said. The proposal does not include any additional courses being added to the mechanical engineering curriculum, it simply enables students to narrow their education on a specific area of expertise within mechanical engineering, Gale said. The proposal does not take away mechanical engineering students' ability to receive a broad education. "We offer a broad range of classes ... If someone wants to be broad they are more than welcome to do that," he said. "People vote for who they know instead of looking at their platforms," said Hannah Stewart, a junior in mass communication. Voting will be available on the CIS page starting today at 7 a.m. and will close Wednesday at io p.m. When a matriculated student logs into his or her CIS page, a pop-up will be displayed. Each student will need to select his or her college and then they will be able to vote. A student will vote for a president, vice president and one assembly person and senator for his or her college. If the student has multiple majors, they will need to select only one to vote. Voting tables will be set up at Marriott Library Plaza and the Heritage Center, where students can use provided laptops to log into their CIS page and vote. In addition, ASUU will provide hot dogs and drinks at voting booths set up on Library Plaza today and Wednesday. The new ASUU president will be announced at io:3o a.m. on Thursday on the Union Patio, weather permitting.
