Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 8 RED ROCKS PAC-12 continued from Page 6 continued from Page 7 all pretty tense," McAllister said, noting that Marsden briefly stopped warm-ups to calm his team. Holding a slim lead, the Red Rocks could have calmed down in the third rotation and created some separation. Utah led the nation on beam, and Georgia ranked iith on its event: floor. The separation that occurred was in favor of the Gym Dogs, however, as Utah struggled to a 49.175, a season low on beam. Georgia posted a seasonhigh 49.3 on floor to take the tenth of a point lead heading into the final rotation. The Red Rocks made up for the beam performance by posting a season-high score of 49.5 on the floor, capped by Lothrop and McAllister. McAllister attributed part of that success to the Utah fans. "I don't remember the last time I felt that kind of atmosphere here in the Huntsman," McAllister said. "I can't even describe the fans. They ... made it that much easier for us to be in the game." Marsden pointed to another intangible — leadership — as a reason for McAllister's and Lothrop's success. "I think, without question, they've really evolved as our leaders on the floor," Marsden said. "They are both very focused and determined athletes. It's fun to see that hard work be rewarded in their performance." At night's end, Lothrop had won the all-around with a 39.475. McAllister was just behind, posting a 39.45. Noel Couch put up a 39.15 for Georgia. Utah hits the road this Sunday to face Arizona State. have struggled mightily in this inaugural season, but that might just be a lack of talent at the moment. The men's team underwent a complete overhaul, and its struggles have not been surprising. The women's basketball team, however, doesn't have that same excuse — it currently sits at No. ii in conference play. Though basketball and football might receive the most attention, the small sports show how much more Utah athletics must learn. When you compete in Pac-12 Olympic sports, you routinely face some of the top teams in the country. Men's swimming has four of the top six ranked teams nationally, and women's swimming has four of the top eight. Cross country and men's golf rankings feature five Pac-12 teams in the Top 25. Last year, baseball placed six in the Top 25, and softball saw seven teams in the Top 20. Outside of football and gymnastics, the Utes have little else in the way of prestige. Inevitably, adjustments were expected for Utah athletics, but maybe we can now answer the previous question: What does Utah athletics now know about the Pac-12? That they have a long way to go.
