Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 8 have Arizona State in the Las Vegas Bowl. FOOTBALL continued from Page 6 Hyundai Sun Bowl will get the third and fourth choice of Pac-12 teams, respectively. ESPN projections have California going to the Holiday Bowl and Utah headed to the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas. Utah and California have identical conference and overall records, and Cal defeated Utah 34-10 when the teams met in San Francisco. Utah's opponent in the Sun Bowl would be an ACC foe. Georgia Tech appears to be a likely opponent. The Yellow Jackets are 8-4 this season. ESPN projections also II Utes make All-Pac-I2 teams Eleven Utes were named to Pac-12 all-conference teams in the program's first season in the conference. Tony Bergstrom, Star Lotulelei and Derrick Shelby received first-team honors while John White and John Cullen received nods to the second team. Honorable mention recipients include Greg Bird, Conroy Black, Brian Blechen, Ryan Lacy, Coleman Petersen and Chaz Walker. The conference awarded Stanford quarterback An- UCLA continued from Page 6 likely the Bruins are the single worst team ever to appear in a conference championship game. In fact, when they lose to Oregon — when, not if — the Bruins will be under .500, meaning they'll be ineligible for a bowl game and will need an NCAA waiver to play in December. It really is a shame for the Pac-12. This weekend's title game was supposed to mark the glorious start of something new for the conference. It was supposed to be the first chance to showcase the shiny new two-division format. Of course, it's not the Pac-12's fault — there is a legitimate South champion, after all. Problem is, a 10-2 USC is in its final year of NCAA sanctions that make it ineligible to compete in the postseason, including the Pac-12 title game, leaving the conference in its current mess. As if there were any doubt the Trojans were the best team in the South — they might even be better than any team in the North, too, drew Luck the Offensive Player of the Year award. California linebacker Mychal Kendricks was named the Defensive Player of the Year. USC receiver Marqise Lee and Oregon running back De'Anthony Thomas were named the conference's top offensive freshmen while USC linebacker Dion Bailey took home the defensive award. Stanford's David Shaw was named Coach of the Year. White shy of rushing record The main story line entering Utah's matchup with Colorado was the possibility to play in the Pac-12 Cham- but that's another matter — they removed doubt Saturday night. The Trojans pulverized the Bruins into tiny granules of powder in their 50-0 win. Trojan quarterback Matt Barkley went 35-for-42 for 423 yards and six touchdowns in a performance that could boost him to New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony. This came after Neuheisel said last week that the Bruins had narrowed the gap with the Trojans, who have lost the storied rivalry game just once since 1998. But the Bruins were again overmatched. They were overmatched in the way Robin Ventura was overmatched when he charged the mound against Nolan Ryan. Or how Pompeii was overmatched by Mount Vesuvius. If anybody is at fault for the Pac12's quandary — apart from UCLA for being abysmal, of course — it's Utah. With a win against threetouchdown underdog Colorado on Friday, the Utes would instead be representing the South in the title game. But they lost to the Buffaloes, who came out with an edge Utah failed to match, despite all Tuesday, November 29, 2011 pionship, but one Ute had a shot at making Utah history. John White was 131 yards away from setting Utah's single-season rushing record entering the game, but a well-prepared Colorado defense and a game-ending ankle injury derailed White's pursuit. The Utah tailback had a slow first half and finished the game with just 28 yards on To carries when he suffered the injury in the third quarter. White now has 1,404 yards on the season, which moved him past Dameon Hunter for second place on Utah's all-time list. Hunter rushed for 1,396 yards in 2001. White trails Carl Monroe that was riding on the game for the Utes. Had it beaten the Buffs, Utah, at 8-4, would have at the very least been a respectable opponent for the Ducks. The Utes would have been riding a five-game conference winning streak, and would have received at least some consideration from voters in the polls. It wouldn't have been as good as a USC/Oregon rematch, but it would have been worth watching, which is more than you can say for the Potemkin title game that will take place on Friday. With UCLA in the game, will anyone even tune in Friday to watch the Ducks run circles around the Bruins? It's the age-old question: If nobody actually sees the Bruins play in the Pac-12 title game, did it actually happen? Unfortunately for the Pac-12, the answer is yes. No matter how much the Pac-12 wishes it wasn't so, its inaugural title game is a sham, a blemish on what was supposed to mark the beginning of a new era. bubba@ chronicle.utah.edu University MEDIA SALES GROUP by 103 yards for the singleseason record of 1,507 yards he set in 1982. Utah still has a bowl game remaining to give White another chance at the record. Injury report Utah suffered a pair of severe scares in the third quarter against Colorado. White's ankle injury could have crippled Utah's offense, but it was the following play that had a more profound impact. Guard Sam Brenner suffered a neck injury and lay motionless on the field for about 15 minutes. Brenner had to be taken off the field in an ambulance but flashed VOLLEYBALL continued from Page 6 Excitement has surrounded Utah athletics since the move to the Pac-12 was announced in June of 2010. Launiere said now that play in the conference has commenced, it is even more exciting. She said it is a good a thumbs-up to the crowd before he was taken away. Brenner was taken to University Hospital. His parents told The Salt Lake Tribune that doctors feared ligament damage, but he has full motion in his extremities. Brenner and White weren't the only players to go down in a costly third quarter. Defensive end Joe Kruger suffered a sprained ankle. Whittingham said Kruger's and White's status for the bowl game will depend on the date. Utah gets this week off from practice, which should help the injured Utes heal. j.bullinger@ chronicle.utah.edu time for Utah athletics. "It is an exciting time for Utah volleyball, for all Utah sports," Launiere said. "People who really watch are going to understand that this conference is going to make us better. Because if you don't get better, you're not going to win." p.lee@ chronicle.utah.edu Twitter!
