The U plays host to numerous, strong student organizations—the LDS Institute of Religion, ski and snowboard clubs, the Associated Students of the University of Utah, several ethnic student groups and the all-inclusive, famous MUSS. One of the most curious, unique and judged organizations on campus is Greek Row. As the Fall Semester begins, so does recruitment week, also known as Rush. This year, about 400 women and 200 men are going through the recruitment process, which began on Saturday. I'm not sure if this unusually massive number is coinciding with the U's inclusion in the Pac-12, but the number is a pleasant surprise to everyone who is a greek. As a member of a fraternity, I will say that Rush is definitely an unforgettable experience for everyone. It's interesting, as many non-greeks on campus can hear the singing of sorority girls and watch the parade of potential members walk down the row. I remember it looked pretty strange when I wasn't involved. This will be my third year at the U, and my second Rush Week. Personally speaking, it's a tiresome process. By the end of every night, there's nothing I want more than the comfort of my bed. Between house tours, throwing themed events and talking greek life for hours, it might seem a bit overwhelming. However, just the process of meeting 200 different men is a phenomenal experience. I am a communication major, with a passion for psychology, writing and speech communication. Sure, I've learned a ton in my classes and I love being a student here, but real-life applications don't come around every day. Not only have I sharpened my creative communication skills, but extended my resources on campus. It's an involved process, from every detail of planning to the last second of the week, but it's forced me to think a lot about who I am and what my life is all about. It's a firm handshake. It's an honest conversation. It's nothing more than an opportunity to discover yourself and open your eyes to your surroundings. It's something that I live for, and something that I can honestly say I never thought I would be a part of. I'm not advocating that everyone needs to join a fraternity or sorority, because honestly, it's not for everyone. I am advocating seizing the opportunities that present themselves. You never know how you're going to feel unless an attempt is made.
