Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Tuesday, March 15, 2011 7 FOOTBALL For next season, players will transition to new roles FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK New faces and new places The Utes are making plenty of changes as they make their transition into the Pac-io, ranging from player positions to implementing a new offense. There is the addition of Norm Chow to the offensive coaching staff, and for the first time since 2003, Utah will not run a spread offense this season. Instead, Chow is introducing what's called a "multiple offense" that will utilize a fullback in the starting lineup rather than starting a third receiver. As far as position changes are concerned, much has been made of safety Brian Blechen moving to linebacker to help round out the starting linebacker line up alongside Chaz Walker and Matt Martinez. Although Blechen was added to the Utah linebacker rotation, Boo Andersen was removed from it. Andersen is being tested at the fullback position and is listed alongside redshirt freshman Jake Murphy and junior Mo Lee as the early favorites to earn the starting job. Wideout Luke Matthews is also making the transition to the back field, moving to running back. Matthews is in a three-way position battle of his own, with junior John White IV and true freshman Harvey Langi. Camp continues Now in the second week of spring camp, the Utes will have two practices this week before taking next week off for Spring Break. Utah will open week two today for a no-tackle practice before returning to full contact Thursday. Both practices are scheduled to be held at Rice-Eccles Stadium and are open to the public as long as weather doesn't force the Utes to move inside. Thursday's practice will be the fifth of the spring. Upon their return from Spring Break, important days include scrimmages April i and April 19, Pro Day on March 29 and the annual Red and White game at Rice-Eccles Stadium to close out the spring April 16. Spring injury report Headlining the list of players who have been held out of spring ball is starting quarterback Jordan Wynn. Wynn is still recovering from the shoulder surgery that kept him out of the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas. In Wynn's absence, quarterbacks Griff Robles and Tyler Shreve have taken all the snaps and split them evenly thus far. Starting tight end Dallin Rogers is nursing a shoulder injury of his own and linebacker J.J. Williams is sidelined with a foot injury. Two members of the defensive secondary will also miss spring practices, as Greg Bird and Chris Washington are nursing shoulder injuries of their own. The positive for the Utes was Stephen Streich's performance. The senior lefty didn't give up an earned run and threw 5.1 innings of relief. "It was a disjointed game for us," Kinneberg said. "Joe Pond wasn't very sharp tonight, and we make an error in the second inning and all of a sudden it's 5-0 and we've only hit once. The one real bright spot was Stephen Streich. His effort was outstanding." The Utes wrapped up the tournament with a 7-4 win over Santa Clara. Utah jumped out to a 3-o lead, but the Broncos tied it with a three-run fourth inning. The Utes responded with a run in the bottom of the inning and Cron's two-run double in the sixth once again gave them a three-run cushion. The Utes added one more run in the seventh, but it was unnecessary, as Wagner escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to close out the game. bubba@chronicle.utah.edu SPR.I N 4 ✓AR.
