Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Tuesday, March 1, 2011 TENNIS RESULTS 7 BASEBALL WOIVENS: Both the men's and women's tennis teams were back in action last week, with the men at home against Denver on Feb. 22 and the women on the road at the Blue Grey Invitational in Montgomery, Ala., during the weekend. The men defeated No. 48 Denver 5-2—however the women struggled early in the weekend, dropping matches to No. 19 Notre Dame and No. 36 Alabama, but finished with a 5-2 win on Sunday over Auburn. The men (5-4) return to the court Friday when they take on Boise State. The women (4-5) are off until March 21 when they will face No. 1 Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. Anton's success shouldn't come as a surprise. As the Utes' No. 2 starter a year ago, Anton, then a junior, went 7-3 and was named a second-team allMountain West Conference member. Adams' success might not be quite as expected. The sophomore spent most of last year in the back end of the bullpen, where he finished with a 4.86 earned run average, earned two saves and struck out 41 batters in 33 innings. "It's a little bit different coming from closer last year to starting this year," he said. "But through high school I started a little bit, so (I'm) just getting back in the routine of throwing a couple more pitches. I'm pretty excited to be put in that spot." Adams said the experiences he gained last year in the bullpen will serve him as a starter. "There's a little bit different of a mentality," he said. "But as far as pressure situations, if you get into the fourth or fifth inning and it starts to get tight, you can kind of fall back onto (the experience from closing) and know what you have to do." Part of what makes Adams successful is his natural pitching ability, which earned him the ranking of the sixth-best player in the state by the Utah Baseball Academy coming out of Cottonwood High. "He's got a great arm, and he's got great stuff," Kinneberg said. "He's learning as we go still, but he's able to throw three or four pitches for strikes, and that's important." Kinneberg has said he expects big things from Adams during the next few seasons, and he liked what he saw from the 6-foot 4-inch righthander last season to entrust him with the role of the second starter. "We put him in those situations last year because we felt like nothing really fazed him," Kinneberg said. "He's a calm, collected guy. He did pitch in some crucial situations for us last year, and hopefully that got him a lot of experience and got his feet wet. Now it's time for him to step up and do it once a week."
