Show mm ARTHUR 6 mm SULLIVAN KILLED IN ACTION id IN FRANCE fl A message which was received on en wednesday tells of the death of well known eureka boy on july nineteenth arthur G sullivan of eureka killed in action this message re calved here early on wednesday morning carried sorrow into the homes 0 of hundreds ot of eureka peo pie mr sullivan was born and raised in this district and was a tin till tic boy in every sense ol 01 the word nord no finer specimen ciman of physical ph rian n an hood could be found anywhere and in every way he was a clean cut tit u ter and honorable young man that he was called upon to pay the supreme sacrifice in the conflict now being waged in northern france is a matter of sincere regret and while his friends here mourn his death they extend a word 0 of sympathy to those who were nearest and dearest to the brave bo the aged parents the sister and the brothers their sorrow Is so great that words of sympathy seem hollow and meaningless and yet the grief that has come to them is a cros croes thai must be borne by many thousands of ti milies throughout the length and breadth of our country arthur G sullivan Is but one ot of many brave men who are daily giving up their lives that the world may be a bet ter place to live in he lie answered his country s call fought as an am soldier should fight in the de tense of his life flag and country and died honorably and herol cly the deceased deceased as born in eureka 22 years ago his parents are mr and mrs john T sullivan pioneer residents ol 01 who but a week or two ago moved to seattle where they have a son leonard sullivan employed in the shipyards another son robert who has been making his home at bingham for several years recently enlisted leonard Is of draft age but was unable to pass ahn th physical examination and deela ed to help out in the shipbuilding business mr air and mrs sullivan also hae hane another son edward and a daughter miss merle sullivan who has been a teacher IS the eu reka schools for a number of 0 yeara years the father of arthur G sullivan Is a veteran of the civil war he ile was in the union army and took part in several notable engage ments mr sullivan has been in n poor health for the past ew ears but was prominently iden filed with local affairs during the arlier artier days of tintic gintic serving as a bace officer at a time when such it bals had real work to perform and ute late holding responsible post alons with some of the mining corn com canles the young man whose name was in n the casualty list published on wednesday was graduated from the gintic tintic high school in 1916 he ile en listed tor for service with the marines in april 1917 and was sent to mare island for preliminary training from that point he was sent to quantico N a and thence overseas in october 1917 he had been in active service in france tor for nearly nine months when the news of his death was received here informs tion which has reached friends here from various sources indicates that he had all the qualities needed to inake make jim an excellent soldier he 11 was made corporal early in his fight ing career and only a short time ago advanced to sergeant ergeant the date of his death was july |
