Rinna Waddhany STAFF WRITER The U is celebrating the 27th Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with events running from Jan. 17 to 21. As well as commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. King, this year's theme "Reaffirming Equal Opportunity: Keeping the Dream Alive" also highlights the debates on equality and civil rights. The keynote speakers are Michael A. Olivas, professor at the University of Houston Law Center; and Kimberle Crenshaw, a UCLA law professor. "Kimberle Crenshaw is great," said Colleen Castro, public relations associate for the Office for Equity and Diversity. "She devotes her time to the study of race and equality." Crenshaw teaches civil rights and constitutional law. She is a founder and leader in the intellectual move- ment called Critical Race Theory, according to UCLA's website. She's scheduled to speak Jan. 18 at noon in the Union Ballroom. Her address will follow a student rally at II a.m. on the Union Patio Walkway, more commonly known as the Free Speech Area. "There will be a couple of student speakers then an open mic for the public," said Whitney Salanoa, administrative assistant for the Office for Equity and Diversity. This year's celebration includes the annual "rally and marade" on Jan. 17. The rally will take place at 2 p.m. at East High School, followed by the "marade," a combination of a march and parade. Jennifer Molock, assistant vice president for student equity and diversity, produced the idea for the marade, inspired by her days at Colorado State University, Salanoa said. The marade runs the route from If you go: What: Keynote address When: Tuesday, noon Where: Union Ballroom How much: Free For more information, go to: diversity.utah.edu East High to President's Circle, following 1300 East and featuring a marching band to accompany marchers along the way. The Venezuelan Bishops' Conference condemned a package of laws approved last month by the National Assembly, including one that grants Chavez power to enact laws by decree for the next 18 months. Chavez gained those powers shortly before a new congress took office with more opposition lawmakers. Feds warn against ex-CIA operative's release ST. LOUIS—A disgruntled former CIA operative accused of dishing confidential documents to a New York Times reporter likely could spill more government secrets if not kept locked up pending his trial, the Justice Department warned in a court filing. The newly unsealed detention request underscores the federal government's unease about Jeffrey Sterling, claiming his "underlying selfish and vindictive motivations" could spur him to disclose more government secrets now that he faces a 10-count indictment in Virginia. I stand before you less then a year later to openly admit, I couldn't have been more wrong. The man brought in to clean up Benitez's mess was former Fulham manager Roy Hodgson, but with Liverpool sitting at No. 12 in the English Premiere League and no sign of improvement as the team has only secured two wins in its past nine games, the club and Hodgson decided to finally cut ties, and not a moment too soon. Liverpool is on pace to not only miss out on a top-four finish for a second straight year, but also to finish the season with its lowest ranking in more than 3o years. With things going from bad to worse, the club has turned to former Liverpool star Kenny Dalglish to not only take over the club, but also to turn morale of both the players and fans. With a little less than half the season remaining, it would take nothing short of a miracle for the Reds to move back into a top-four position. As long as the club can stay out of the relegation zone, the club has nothing to lose by gambling with Dalglish. Worst-case scenario, the team continues to struggle, Dalglish will most likely serve more in an interim role and the club can begin a full-scaled search this summer during the offseason. Best-case scenario, the hire of a Liverpool household name (and legend) will change the losing culture that has arisen this season and the players and fans alike will be rejuvenated by the move.
