Show 3 DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE June 2010 Students get involved at the Residence Halls Mitch Sears STAFF WRITER ANDY WRIGHT/The Daily Utah Chronicle The transition from living at home to life at a university residence can be extreme. The Residence Halls Association hopes to make that transition go smoothly. RHA is a student-run organization that helps students living on campus. The RHA is "the primary means of involvement for incoming freshmen," said Quentin Hodges, president of RHA. Hodges suggests students look into joining one of the RHA student boards. For incoming freshmen, there is a First Year Board that is geared toward providing programming specially tailored for new students. Incoming students wanting to get more involved in campus life should check their mailboxes. RHA will be sending a newsletter at the end of summer, telling students what they can do in RHA. Every year, RHA puts on many events Textbooks at the University Campus Store have the advantage of being close to students and easy to access. However, many students opt to buy books from other sources, such as websites. STAFF WRITER One thing college students miss about high school is the free textbooks. Unfortunately, nearly every class will have book requirements, and students are responsible to make sure they have it. There are many places books can be bought: the Internet, used bookstores, from students who have previously taken the class, and from the University Campus Store. "(Buying books from the Bookstore) is the easiest way...but it's probably the most expensive way," said Jenny Hutchison, an undeclared sophomore. The bookstore offers both new and used books, however, new books are more expensive. The risk with buying a used book is that students might find the book condition to either be almost new or extremely used. It is sometimes possible to find a used book that has less wear than others and is in almost new condition. Each year, more students buy books through the Internet. Books can be bought on sites such as Amazon, eBay and ksl.com. A lot of websites offer books for cheaper prices than the U Bookstore does, but there can be problems with buying online. Jennifer Tateoka, a senior in exercise and sport science, said she is nervous to buy books online. "At the bookstore, I get to hold the book in my hand, and not have to worry about what the book is really like," Tateoka said. A lot of students run into problems with books taking a long time to ship when they are bought from online sources, which puts them in a hard position when they don't have their book in class. Professors tell the bookstore what books they will be using every semester, so the bookstore will be sure to have the textbook in stock. Students can find out what books to buy for their classes from the bookstore or from the bookstore's website by looking at the professor's name and the class number on their schedule. At the end of each semester, the U Bookstore gives cash for textbooks, butstudents rarely get back all the money they paid for their books. tweet a little hardergg &Err need more tweets? mothertwuckertwitt • e rtwee I t tWeetleManiaCtLiC,j2t speak twitter heard on tlie tweet maltweeted ca r tweet a little harderspeak twitter tweetvva ker,RT twine awe etrtligpggiti lE site: www.offcampushousing. utah.edu. During the event, students will have the opportunity to speak with property managers over the off-campus U community, and ask whatever questions they might have. The U offers help in finding housing off-campus through its web- m.sears@chronicle.utah.edu Service Learning Beyond the bookstore Brandon Brown for residents. These range from informational workshops about healthy student living, to social events like "Club HC"—the annual dance party held at the front commons of the Heritage Center. Resident dues pay for the events put on by RHA. Michelle Glaittli, RHA treasurer, said last year the organization had $40,000 per semester to spend on programming. Students are welcome to propose their own ideas for events through their residential adviser. RAs can request funding for any initiative at monthly RHA meetings, which are open to the public. Residents are welcome to listen to how their dues are being spent and find out other news concerning the Residence Halls. For more information on RHA or for student board applications, visit the RHA website at www.rha.utah.edu or drop by the office in the Heritage Center.
