Show THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Tuesday, March 9, 2010 7 HOCKEY letters@chronicle.utah.edu Skatin' Utes end season with first winning record Jake Bullinger FINAL SCORES Utah vs. Utah State STAFF WRITER Even without a win, the Skatin' Utes once again defied expectations in last weekend's season finale. In two hard-fought games against powerhouse Utah State, the Utes came away with a 7-4 loss and a 5-5 tie. The tie caused Utah to finish the season 16-15-1, making this the first winning season since the club's organization in 2006. Never before has "hardfought" been a more suitable adjective. The first game yielded a total of eight player disqualifications for fighting. Defenseman Ben Wilner was the only Ute ejected. "I'm super proud of all the boys," said forward Beau Bertagnolli. "A lot of them had chances to fight and go after it, but they swallowed some pride and let (Utah State) take the penalties." Amid the brawling, Utah was able to hang with the Game 1 March 5 Game 2 March 6 1-5 2-6 more skilled Aggies. With one of Utah State's goals coming on an empty net, Utah essentially lost the game by only two goals. Head coach Jon Bertagnolli said it was impressive for his team to compete in such a hostile environment. The next night, Utah came back to Salt Lake City and faced an Aggie team that had lost seven men to the disqualifications. Conditions were ripe for an upset, and Utah led 4-1 after a power-play goal by Bertagnolli in the second period. For the first 35 minutes of play, Utah goalie AJ Boldan was impenetrable. However, Utah State's high shot count finally got to Boldan. From 5 minutes 33 seconds remaining TYLER COBB/The Daily Utah Chronicle Utah goalie Andy Hill makes a glove save against Montana State. The Skatin' Utes finished with their first winning season last weekend. Two of Utah State's goals were shorthanded. "We broke down defensively," Boldan said. "As a team...we let it slide, I guess." "A lot of people are going to say we had a letdown," Bertagnolli said. "I don't think that's the case. We still were working hard. We just tried to get a little too pretty." The hard work did not evaporate after the Aggie run. After the four Utah State goals, Utah suddenly resumed the defense that was on display in the first period. With 8:53 remaining, forward Andrew Reed put in a rebound goal that would eventually send the game to overtime. In the five-minute overtime period, Utah was presented multiple chances to win the game. No more than 3o seconds in to the period, Ute defenseman Robert Hennessey missed an open power-play shot just feet away from the net. Utah couldn't buck this trend in overtime, and the game went to a three-man shootout. Utah State won the shootout 2-I, which would have given the team a 6-5 win. However, per American Collegiate Hockey Association rules, shootouts only count in tournament situations, so the game was officially ruled a tie. "We gave it our all," Boldan said. "We left it out there for 65 minutes plus the shootout... I'm proud of our team." Before last weekend, Utah had not come within eight goals of Utah State. The players and coaches were proud of their performance against the Aggies and felt it was a fitting way to end a season characterized by improvement. "We just came together as a team...2o guys out playing for each other and not for themselves," said head coach Jon Bertagnolli. "We learned what it meant to be competitive." j.bullinger@ chronicle.utah.edu GOAL SCORERS FOR UTAH Friday: Andrew Reed 1, Beau Bertagnolli 1, Mike Vrtis 1, Elliot Faulkner 1 Saturday: Andrew Reed 2, Beau Bertagnolli 2 (1 power play), Chris Russell (1 power play) Even hamsters write letters to the editor.
