Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Monday, March 8, 2010 RUGBY continued from Page 1 Burdette. "But I thought we played better as a whole. It's a frustrating loss because we had our chances, but instead a couple of penalties cost us the game." A wet pitch gave both teams substantial trouble throughout the game. The slick surface caused many footing errors and dropped balls, slowing the game to a kicking, forward-oriented play. As a result, the errors created trouble for ball carriers who struggled to catch the slippery ball. Those troubles translated into penalties against the Utes in their own half, resulting in successful kicks for penalty points for the Cougars. "It's really unfortunate when dumb mistakes kill you in the end," said wing Chase Jardine. "It was a game that ended up being determined by penalties." In the opening minutes of the first half, Utah was in control, forcing BYU's offense to kick the ball away from its own half of the field. The Utes were the first to draw a penalty, but they failed to convert for any points. BYU's Shaun Davies successfully kicked in the seventh minute to give the Cougars a 3-o lead. Despite several impressive wide runs from the offense that approached the line, Utah was unable to score. Two defensive penalties allowed the Cougars two more successful penalty kicks to pull away 9-o. Utah, however, once it began to settle with the ball, soon made it evident how volatile and dangerous its offense could be, especially on the sides. Flyhalf Thretton Palamo made a wide toss to Jardine in the 3oth minute for an easy try. However, the Utes were unable to convert, letting the Cougars lead 9-5 at the half. In the second 4o, Utah remained in control of the game, forcing more than a dozen penalties on the Cougars, the majority of them offsides or obstruction calls. A late tackle Follow us on Twitter! call against the Utes, however, put the Cougars at 12-5. A line-out—when the ball is put back into play after going off the field—gave the Utes a second try from Mike Kimball in the 64th minute, putting the game at 12-10. Both teams continued to rack up penalties, but only the Cougars had a successful conversion, boosting their lead 15-10. In the final seconds of the game, Utah came close to scoring a third try. Although it seemed to the Utah players BYU was diving—which would be a penalty—a holding penalty was instead issued to the Utes, resulting in a BYU ball and win for the Cougars. Despite the loss, Utah hopes to redeem itself against BYU in the Utah College Rugby Showdown on March 24 at Rio 9 Tinto Stadium. "Whenever there's a rivalry game, everyone's mistakes seem so much bigger," Burdette said. "But really, we're going to just stick with what we're doing and go from there. Hopefully we're going to come back in a couple of weeks ready to prove ourselves against (BYU)." Utah will play the University of Washington at home Saturday.
