Show DAILY N UTAH CHRO ICLE Monday, March 1, 2010 7 Reserve players save Utes against Wyoming Jake Bullinger STAFF WRITER Usually, a team's bench players don't determine the outcome of a game. This can't be said about the Ute reserves, who were saviors in Saturday's 74-64 win over Wyoming. Utah's bench keyed the victory by scoring 38 points, which helped Utah overcome lackluster defense in the paint and a slew of early turnovers. "I've never made a big deal about starting in my program," said head coach Jim Boylen. "It's about who finishes, who can play, who can help us win." The Ute backups did not just provide extra scoring. Rather, they hit key shots that paved the way for a second half in which Utah outscored Wyoming 43-33. Twice in the second half, Chris Hines hit a 3-pointer that halted Wyoming's hope for a comeback. Jason Washburn knocked down a momentous left-handed jump hook that brought the crowd in the Huntsman Center to their feet. Carlon Brown also scored six of his i6 points in the final 6 minutes 3o seconds, helping seal the victory. THIEN SOK/The Daily litah Chronicle Jason Washburn came off the bench and put in a left-handed jump shot that energized the crowd. Along with Washburn, a lot of the Utah bench contributed to the win Saturday. "As long as we play how we did tonight, come together and find ways to win, we should be fine," Brown said. Leading the Utes in scoring, Brown has thrived coming off the bench. The junior spent the previous two seasons in the same role and has served as a mentor for freshmen such as Hines and Washburn. "Our leaders need to lead, and our young guys need to follow and contribute in any way we can," said Washburn, who scored seven points Saturday. Utah's style of play was sharply contrasted by Wyoming. Although every Utah player to touch the floor scored, Wyoming's bench scored a measly II points. The Cowboy offense was almost entirely from freshman Desmar Jackson, who scored 31 of the Cowboys' 64 points. But just like UNLV's Tre'Von Willis and Michigan's Manny Harris, Jackson's impressive performance did not outweigh Utah's offensive balance. Three Utes scored in double figures, and only three scored fewer than five points. The Ute reserves also helped spur Utah's defensive improvement in the second half. Washburn and Kim Tillie played much better defense in the paint after halftime, and Boylen said he felt that Hines did the best job of slowing the red-hot Jackson. The contributions off the bench were more than just icing on the cake—they were necessary for Utah to get the win. Utah was outscored 46-24 in the paint, mostly thanks to Jackson knifing through Ute defenders. The win against Wyoming shows that depth will be one of Utah's great assets going into the conference tournament, which is only a week away. Last year's conference champs had players such as Shaun Green and Tyler Kepkay coming off the bench, and Boylen said he believes that team set a standard for this year's young bunch. "We have a young team," Boylen said. "We have guys that have never come off the bench in their life, and it's an adjustment. But I think we've made it—I think we are starting to understand it." The Utes will need that same sort of balance if they hope to get a win against rival BYU on Wednesday. j.bullinger@chronicle.utah.edu ...and news can be inspiring, too. TYLER COBB/The Daily Utah Chronicle Chris Hines gets a talking to from Jim Boylen after Hines and Desmar Jackson exchanged words and both got technical fouls. MEN continued from Page 6 final four games of the season. To pick up a win against the Cougars, the Utes will have to play a lot like they did Saturday. "We made a goal to finish the season 4-o," Drca said. "We have BYU coming in and have a tough road game against Colorado State. We are right on track to get to our goal. This would be a big accom- GYMNASTICS continued from Page 6 because I didn't want that to happen again. Last week was so weird—it was just a mistake and a bad meet and it was just good to hit a meet again." Marsden praised Deetscreek after the meet, saying that more of the team needed to attack the beam like she did in order to be successful. "Other than Jamie, we got scared and competed scared," Marsden said. "We just tried to stay on the beam rather than really attacking. The rest of the team has to approach it like Jamie and do what they are capable of. Everyone else let what happened in front of them affect their performance, which is tough not to do, but we were doing a better job of that earlier in the season, which is discouraging. We've got to get back to that." With several injuries plaguing the team, some gymnasts finally plishment because we haven't won a lot of games in a row in a long time." With BYU coming in, Boylen stressed that this isn't just another game for his team. "It's our last home game, they're our rival, they're ranked and they beat us last time," Boylen said. "We have to play better, play for each other and get a lot from a lot of guys." pfieldsted@ chronicle.utah.edu got their chance to compete. Meg Whitney competed for the first time all season, performing on vault and floor, earning scores of 9.8 and 9.625, respectively. "It was awesome to get out there and hit my routines," Whitney said. "I was just really excited that I got my chance to compete, and it was exciting." Jacquelyn Johnson also competed for the third week in a row and after the meet, Marsden said Whitney and Johnson could challenge for permanent spots in the lineup. With only four meets left until the postseason, Marsden said the team needs to get back to having fun like the in the beginning of the season. "We just have to keep working and try not to let things get in our heads," Marsden said. "We have to get back to the point where we are competing with confidence and not worrying about making mistakes." pfieldsted@ chronicle.utah.edu contact m.mcfill@chronicle.utah.edu for information about being a news writer CLASSIFIEDS Personals hey Mike, Good news I paid only $29.95 at www.havetaxes.com to file my taxes.
