Show 8 Friday, February 26, 2010 RED ROCKS continued from Page 3 will continued to be involved. It's exciting for them to get a chance to compete and to see what we have waiting in the wings if we ever need someone down the line," Marsden said. For the team members who don't usually compete, staying mentally prepared is crucial in being ready to compete when called upon. "In practices I just keep trying to make my routines better so hopefully I will get to compete that week," Johnson said. "I have it in my mind that I am competing, that way it is easier, rather being like, 'Oh wow, I have to compete now' and try to get ready at that moment." To get ready for BYU, the Red Rocks are focusing on having positive, upbeat attitudes that will carry over into the meet and their performances. "We've been trying to come together more as a team and the theme this week was spirit week because we're competing against BYU," Johnson said. "We've all been wearing Utah stuff and trying to stay positive. If you build up more positive workouts it eventually carries over to the meet." The Red Rocks are excited, not only to be competing against BYU, but to be performing in front of their own fans. "BYU is always fun to compete against because it's BYU and they're our rivals," Robarts said. "It'll be nice to have a lot of our home fans." pfieldsted@ chronicle.utah.edu Season Utah Stats BYU No. 9 National Ranking N/A Vaults average 48.505 Bars average 48.330 Beam average 48.065 Floor average 48.205 Total average 193.165 49.125 48.930 49.970 49.085 195.995 ui TWINTIP SKI . With Asiata coming back, come fall the Utes will have a loaded backfield with Eddie Wide, Sausan Shakerin and Shaky Smithson also returning. Wide took over the starting role after Asiata went down last season and went on to rush for more than woo yards. Smithson converted from wideout to running back in order to add depth as well as run the "Asiata package." With so much talent in the backfield, it will be up to Whittingham and his coaching staff to utilize each player and divide carries accordingly. But don't expect a starter to be named anytime soon. "We're not going to make any statements as to how the setup will be or how many carries," Whittingham said. "We'll have to wait till Matt gets back on the field. The positive is that we have two proven backs. Matt was very productive in 2008 and the year Eddie had for us last year was big for us, so we can't make any determination how it will be structured until we get Matt back on the field." No matter who's lined up in the backfield, with so much quality and depth at the running back position, there is no doubt that the Utes' strong running game will be a valuable asset to quarterback Jordan Wynn as he continues his development as a sophomore. "Well, a quarterback's best friend is a strong running game," Whittingham said. "If you have a strong running game, that really sets up the passing game, so that's the biggest thing we can do for Jordan. It's a lot easier to throw the ball on second and three than second and 12 or third and 10. So if we can continue to be productive in the run game, that will really be a big boost." b.chouinard@chronicle.utah.edu • TRAVEL BAGS • CAR TOPS SKI/BOARD RACKS • UNDERWEAR • PANTS • PARKAS VD U_I ASIATA *Bring this ad for $5 off, for any purchase over $25 Huka's Starting at UNUU Free supplies with purchase of $30+ |
