Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Thursday, February 18,2010 TRACK continued from Page 6 credit to her perseverance after dealing with multiple injuries. As a whole, we're really proud of our group." With the MWC Championships two weekends away, Utah's training will begin to taper slightly. Tapering is a training technique that is essential for peak performances, especially in track. However, with the outdoor season just around the corner, the taper- WOMEN continued from Page 6 is important because it puts us closer to the top of the conference, and I feel like we are really getting better each week." Utah shot 46.4 percent from the floor in the second half on 13-of-28 shooting and held UNLV to 15.2 percent on 5-of33 shooting. The Utes also dominated under the basket, outrebounding the Rebels 2819 and by scoring 22 points in the paint, compared to just six from UNLV in the second half. "We moved a lot better in the second half," said Elliott. "We were cutting better, moving without the ball, and shots started to fall." 7 ing will not be too substantial. "We're lucky as we look towards the championships, since we don't have any substantial injuries that will affect our performance," Kepler said. "Just a few nicks and bangs, but nothing serious." Utah has not finalized any entrants for the championships yet, since several of its athletes will be competing in the Wildcat Tune-Up at Weber this weekend. BYU and Air Force will both be at the meet, which allows the Utes to gauge their opponents in the MWC. In track, a team earns various points depending on the finishes of its athletes. In large meets such as a championship, the top eight finishes in each event earn points for a team. First place earns io points, and the score decreases down to one point at eighth place. For Utah, which has a strong number of top-io contenders—the Utes had 18 top-to finishes in one meet this season—it is crucial for the athletes to finish in the top eight. Individual athletes qualify for regional meets by posting either provisional qualifying times or finishing in the top three of an event. Although the MWC Championship is undoubtedly the most pressing item for the team, the Utes are eager for the outdoor season, which begins in March. "We've been cooped up being indoor," said Kepler. "We're ready for some fresh air." k.price@ chronicle.utah.edu Although they had a successful second half, Utah came out of the gates slow, going scoreless for nearly the first nine minutes of the game. "I wasn't disappointed in the shots we were getting," Elliott said. "They just weren't falling, and I told the team to just stick with it and eventually they would (fall)." Their first points came off of a Whipple jumper with it minutes left in the first half. Fortunately for the Utes, UNLV was having trouble putting the ball in the hoop as well, and the Utes were able to tie the game at 17 heading into the break. In the first half, both teams had nearly identical statistics, both shooting just 7 for 29 from field-goal range and a combined 2 for 19 beyond the arc. Whipple led the way for the Utes with a double-double on 19 points and II rebounds. Halie Sawyer also recorded a double-double with II points and to rebounds. For UNLV, Erica Helms was the only Rebel to score in double digits with 17 points. Only five Rebel players scored, with just two scoring more than four. Utah finished the night on 35 percent shooting and held the Rebels to 19.4 percent. The 6-5 record with five games left to play still gives the Utes a chance to finish near the top of the conference rankings, if they have a solid finish to the season. They will play three home games out of the final five, and they also have the two bottom-of-the-conference teams left to play. Utah's next game will be Wednesday in the Huntsman Center, where they will take on San Diego State at 7 p.m. c.godfrey@ chronicle.utah.edu emIN OVERTURE MEN continued from Page 6 minutes into the first half. "It was a good start," Boylen said. "It was fun to have a good start because we've had such a hard time with it this year. It was great." Although Utah took an eight-point lead into halftime, the Utes were pushed in the second half, thanks in large part to a monster night from Rebel standout Tre'Von Willis, who had a game-high 32 points. "He's a tough cover for us, I'll tell you that," Boylen said. Although Willis' 20 points in the second half gave the Rebels a chance as the game wound down, ultimately it was Brown who put his team over the top. With the game tied at 61-61 with just more than a minute left, Brown hit a clutch jumper that ultimately proved to be the game-winner. Boylen said the play was one the team has run before and was planned in the timeout taken immediately before it. "That's kind of his play, and it's his job to get us a good shot, and I thought he did," Boylen said. The Runnin' Utes will now turn their attention to a road game against San Diego State on Saturday. j.simmons@chronicle.utah.edu 14111 pp Ili .dailyutahchronicle.co Daily Utah C1;ironifil FILMS INVITE YOU AND A GUEST TO A SPECIAL ADVANCE SCREENING 1111••■ Sunorr G. 4., gmmiter r• V tettaiame thnici Lagoon Entertainment 71Fr .a FUR TIly HEIGHBUR is seeking skilled and dedicated personnel for the following positions: a Stage Managers House Managers COMING SOON Sound Technicians SCREENING WILL BE HELD ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 25 AT 8 PM. en.
