Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Monday, February 1, 2010 MEN continued from Page 6 "Yeah, that was a great decision on my part," Boylen said, jokingly. The Utes never gave up in their effort to come back, and despite trailing by 14 at halftime at 44-3o, they came out fighting in the second half. Watkins caught fire for the Utes, and combined with some sharpshooting from Marshall Henderson to get the Utes back in the game, he cut the Cougar lead to four points with six minutes 51 seconds remaining. However, Henderson lost his touch from long range as Fredette began his game-changing run, and Watkins was unable to keep pace with the Cougar standout. "We dug ourselves out of the early hole that we were in and we felt that the momentum was on our side, but with a great team and a great player GYMNASTICS continued from Page 6 Marsden said. "By then, Annie (DiLuzio) was kind of freaked out, so we decided to sit her out and go with Stephanie McAllister. Steph was ready for that opportunity, so it worked out." On the vault, Kyndal Robarts had the best score for the team with a 9.8. Robarts had been scoring more than 9.9 with her vault but was deducted for steps on the landing. As a team Utah put up a 48.875 on the vault. The Red Rocks had their best performance of the season thus far on the uneven bars, scoring a team total of 49.150, with four of the six gymnasts scoring above 9.8. Darla Bijak led the team in the event with a 9.875 on the bars. Opposite of the uneven bars, the Red Rocks earned their lowest team score of the season on the floor. WOMEN continued from Page 6 in the final three minutes and went on to lose, 69-52. "I was displeased," said Utah head coach Elaine Elliott. "It wasn't a move forward for us. It was hard to watch. The mistakes that we made were blatant and we've been better than that, so that's disappointing." Despite the final score, the first half was quite a battle. In the first 15 minutes, the score was tied five times, there were four lead changes, and neither team lead by more than four. But BYU guard Haley Hall started to heat up in what would be a in Jimmer Fredette, they stretched the lead back to double digits, and we couldn't get back in it after that," Watkins said. When the dust settled just minutes later, the Cougars were up by 13 points, and the Utes couldn't trim the deficit to single digits. Things looked like they might get nasty when Marshall Henderson brushed Jackson Emery's nose with his forearm—evoking a dramatic re- sponse from Emery, who fell to the floor like a felled boxer—but the game officials quickly restored order and the game finished without incident. Although Henderson was ejected for the incident, Boylen said it was a simple mistake by the young player and pointed out that Emery was uninjured, and the game finished peacefully. The Utes will now look to bounce back Wednesday at home against Colorado State and will bide their FREDETTE DiLuzio led the way with a 9.875 on the floor, but Utah had to count a score of 9.525 from Jamie Deetscreek, whom the judges gave a starting value of only 9.9. "Apparently one of Jamie's leaps wasn't the value we thought," said co-head coach Megan Marsden, "But we're ready to upgrade her tumbling anyway, so it won't be a problem." The Red Rocks finished strong with a team score of 49.10. Deetscreek recovered from her low score on the floor to lead the Utes on the beam with a team high of 9.9. DiLuzio was also big on the beam, earning a career-high 9.875. Bijak won her second straight all-around with an overall score of 39.225. In her first competition as an all-arounder, McAllister was second for the team scoring, a 39.100. The Red Rocks will have to look for a way to create their own energy again this week, as they will be on the road again to face Arizona State. continued from Page 6 taking some good shots and was able to make them tonight," Fredette said. Count Utah head coach Jim Boylen among the Fredette believers. "I think he's the best player in this league in a long time," Boylen said. "I haven't been in this league that long, but he's the best player we've played against this year, and we've played a heck of a schedule. He's a terrific player, a terrific competitor. He's a great kid—he represents BYU with a lot of class and pride, and they should be proud of him." Boylen said Fredette's rare combination of ball skills, shooting ability and strength when finishing plays at the hoop, will make him an attractive player to NBA teams. Fredette, who is a junior, will have the option of entering the NBA Draft or returning to BYU for his senior p.fieldsted@chronicle.utah.edu career night for her, leading BYU into the locker room with an ii-point lead, 32-21. Hall finished with a game-high 24 points, as well as nine rebounds and sixfor-nine shooting from 3-point range—all were career-highs. Because of injuries, Hall has had to sit out the past three matchups against Utah and was excited to finally be able to compete in this rivalry game. "This is a game I've looked forward to," Hall said. "And this was a huge win for us to get back on track in the conference race." Utah's Kalee Whipple had her second straight double-double with i6 points and ii rebounds. Taryn Wicijowski finished with II points. 7 The Cougars shot 47.2 percent from field-goal range on 25-for-53 shooting. They also shot 4o percent from behind the 3-point line, connecting on io of 25. Utah shot 32.7 percent on 17 of 52 from field-goal range and 25 percent on threeof-12 shooting from the 3-point line. The win for BYU ties it for first place in the Mountain West Conference standings with a 5-2 record in conference play, and the Utes' loss brings them to a 3-4 conference record. The Utes will travel to Fort Collins, Colo., to take on Colorado State on Wednesday. He's pretty good." Fredette's gameplay marred what was a good indicator of how well the Utes are capable of playing. Utah outplayed the conference-leading Cougars for much of the second half. Down i8 points early in the second half, the Utes surged to get back within four points, showing that they are perhaps closer to being able to defeat the Cougars than the final score of 82-69 would suggest.
