When Vick's case hit, PETA On "Students first, not USTAR" (Matt Plummer, Aug. 25, 2009) ©pinion and the Humane Society said the pit bulls, like all dogs saved from similar fight rings, were beyond rehabilitation and they should be put down. Ultimately, thanks to a letter-writing campaign, 47 of the dogs were saved and effectively rehabilitated; 10 were even relocated to Utah. Veterinarian Frank McMillan, the director of Best Friends Animal Society in Southern Utah, said that of all dogs, pit bulls possess the single greatest ability to bond with people. The bottom line is that dogs bite for a variety of reasons including, but not limited to, fear, pain or just plain surprise. Any dog can bite, not just pit bulls. People should take care when they are around unfamiliar animals, even if they don't do anything to provoke an attack. Should a "tame" dog start biting, it is the owner's fault for not properly training the animal. Rather than condemning a breed, maybe the answer is to just spay and neuter bad pit bull owners. letters@chronicle.utah.edu On "Intoxicated student found in Residence Halls" (Michael McFall, Aug. 24, 2009) News priority? If you want an education first mentality at a school, go to UVU, or SLCC. Get over it, USTAR is worth the 9.5 increase in tuition. If it wasn't USTAR it'd be something else they choose to raise tuition over. Why blame USTAR? They raise tuition every year. You're an idiot Matt Plummer. You picked the most useless topic to write about, and you didn't even make a logical argument. Reports indicate that pizza, a frisbee, and toga-related paraphernalia were found near the student. It may seem to be an over-reaction, but I wish someone would have done it for my brother. Its not worth the risk to assume your friend will "sleep it off". Kudos to the HRE staff members who sought help. Why are you going to college? I'm majoring in strategic communications. I want to work for a nonprofit organization as a PR professional. Just to further my education, get that piece of paper, so I can make money and get a real job. To learn, I guess. I'm studyinq philosophy studying and joining the military. Getting my elementary deqree. Ifs education degree. my biggest goal in life to finish my degree. I took a year off to teach and I can't wait to be back, so I'm glad I'm here. Just to get an education, become become aa education, professional and help my community. I want to have a good career.IIwant want to tobe be career. succesful. 1 want to make money, but without my degree I don'tthinklwill. 2. What effect of budget cuts has impacted you the most? I'm not sure. I transferred from SLCC just this summer, so I haven't actually been here for more than a semester. So I haven't seen any difference. Not having syllabi has been weird, going into classes or getting lastminute e-mails from my teachers saying we're not going to have a syllabus. I don't know that I've noticed. I guess tuition's gone up, so that's noticeable. I notice it on campus, but I've been gone for a year, obviously, so not a ton yet. But just because my major is elementary education, I notice it a lot in the classroom. Tuition. Yeah, it's more expensive so it really hurts. Lucky me, I have a scholarship so I'm OK with that. But I see my friends struggling to pay their tuition. I noticed that tuition is a lot more expensive, and that sucks. But it's OK, because school is important. _t 3. How should the U ease demand for parking? I think more people should take TRAX. Influence people to'ride their bikes. They have a lot of bike racks, but they're In inconvenient locations most of the time. And maybe do some more patrolling. I don't know. It's pretty bad, though. It's going to help when they stop all the road construction I guess, or when that finishes. 1 attended Weber State one semester and 1 know it was kind of a good idea how they did it. They only sold as many parking passes as there were spots. I think students should be encouraged to take the shuttle. I think It's great transportation. 1 do think they need to make more parking spots. Less construction. 1 noticed that there f has been a lot of . construction over the past few months, even years, actually. * 4. What class areyou the most excited for? Probably my PR Cases and Campaigns class. The professor seems awesome and he's planning on using a lot of campaigns that will help us with the real world instead of focusing a lot on theories. I just took this Power Basics class with Alan Sandomirand he's just super passionate about it and it's been really fun learning about that kind of stuff. I think that's by far my favorite class so far. I'm taking a class on the Vietnam War, which I guess I'm most excited for because the other classes I'm taking this semester aren't that exciting. All of them. They're all for my education degree, so they're all pretty fun. They're not boring generals. So I think all of them. Anything according to your degree is when it starts getting fun. I would say astronomy. It's "Does ET Exist?" I love astronomy, I love physics, so that is supposed to be my favorite class. And so far it is. Probably Spanish 3020. My teacher is from Spain and she's kind of crazy and fun. And it's just more conversation and more activities with other people. So it will be less about book work and more about interacting. 5. Did you spend more or less on books this semester than in the past? This semester I think it was $145, which is probably the least amount I've ever spent. One class I already had the book, and two classes were using the same book, and then one class doesn't need any new books. I didn't have to buy two books just because my friends already had them, so it was less. But if I had to, it would have been way more. I spent $326 on three books. I still have one to buy, so we'll see. I don't know. It's expensive. It was less than some past semesters, but more than some past semesters as well. I'm done with all my required classes so I'm taking classes that might have more expensive text books. So much less. I was in shock. It was like $250, and every semester in the past I've spent about $500. No taxes. I don't know how they did It all besides the taxes and how they're making the books, but they did a good job. I spent about $220, because I was in Mexico so I always buy. my books online before •school starts. It seems every year the books are becoming more expensive, especially as you begin to take more upper division classes, It was less because I T , • had some books from „ previous classes that / , I didn't need to buy . anymore, but I think I spent almost $300 and I'm taking five classes.
