"The offensive rebounds were huge," Boylen said. Bryant and Luka Drca both hit 3-pointers with less than three minutes in the game to cut Tulsa's lead to five twice, but were answered by a Ray Reese 3 the first time and a Ben Uzoh lay up the second to keep a Utah win out of reach. Uzoh finished with 22 points, including an n-for-14 performance from the line, to lead the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa shot just 38.3 percent from the field, but managed to shoot 80 percent from the foul line on 36 attempts. Bryant did his best to extend his first and only postseason trip with 19 points, but Luke Nevill's 12 points and nine rebounds were about the only other statistical bright spot for the Utes. Notes: The Utes lost by double digits 10 times last season, including four losses of 20 points or more. This year Utah's 15-point loss to Santa Clara was their most lopsided defeat and they only lost two others by double digits. The nine point loss to Tulsa was their fourth worst of the season. t.pizza@ ch ronicle.utah.edu UTE BRIEFS continued from Page 6 Utah football wide receiver Marquis Wilson, who has been barred from team activities since February, remains suspended indefinitely by the coaching staff and cannot practice or lift with the team. The reason for the suspension has not yet been revealed, and the Utah coaching staff has not yet released a statement on the matter. After experiencing success in both his sophomore and junior seasons, Wilson was expected to be a starter for the Utes in 2008. He caught 25 passes for 398 yards and three touchdowns in his sophomore season, then followed up with 18 catches for 285 yards and three touchdowns in his junior season. Wilson, who will be a senior next season, was considered by many to be the Utes' best downfield threat, averaging 15.9 yards per catch in his career. Wilson's reinstatement to the team, which returns to spring ball today, is contingent upon his meeting several undisclosed requirements. START STRONG. American United ^ ! BLUES PLUS 500 Foothill Drive Salt Uke City, UT M l « After opening MWC play by winning one of three games against San Diego State at Franklin Covey Field last weekend, the U baseball team steps back out of conference play to take on in-state foe Utah Valley State College. The Utes (7-12, 1-2) get a chance to hone up their skills against the Wolverines, who sit at a paltry 4-16-1 and are on a five-game losing streak. Utah struggled at the plate against the Aztecs, averaging four runs per game, and its pitching staff couldn't hold SDSU's bats at bay. Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg and Co. lost the first game Thursday, 7-2, then bounced back with a 7-5 win Friday before finishing the weekend with a 9-3 loss to the Aztecs on Saturday. "I don't think we swung the bats to our potential, especially on Saturday," Kinneberg said. "I was fairly disappointed with our offensive outing last weekend." The Utes will need to get the bats going early and often if they are going to edge one game closer to ,500 against the Wolverines. "I'm sure we'll see their top pitcher, so it will be interesting to see how we play on Tuesday," Kinneberg said. The Utes will step back into conference play Saturday when they kick off a threegame series against Air Force at Franklin Covey. • Cody Brunner |
