Jon Utah Man * (Tiara Auxier,> 3/6/08) Opinion posted 3/15/08 @ 7:22 PM MST posted 3/14/08® 11:18 AM MST Hey, let's get some commentary on this...what happened? What was the biggest differences between the two candidates? I thought Focus had good candidates but that Spork was out and about and would get a lot of votes... Let's start a good discussion. &. JohnnyTsunami How can you say that this (or any election) is successful when only 3,000 out of over 30,000 students voted? And this is the school record for number of people voting? It just shows that the campaigners method of buying vo^es with food worked on a few more people this year. This shows that hardly anyone at the U cares about what ASUU does (mainly because they don't do anything). posted 3/14/08 @ 11:38 AM MST A* It was their posters... They never stood a chance. Mr Anonymous posted 3/06/08 @ 7:10 AM MST Miss Auxier, I think it's fair to say that Mr. Obama might have political leanings that appear to some to be somewhat akin to socialism. It's certainly fair to say that you are concerned that he would promise a good deal more welfare-type programs than some of his opponents. But to say that he would be a dictator is indefensible. I have read many of your previous articles, and have sometimes been amused, and other times felt the need to defend you. Not this time. You have overstepped it. You could do better. *t-« Madison posted 3/14/08 @ 1:08 PM MST Utah_Pike171 Focus was better organized in every way possible. However, I would like to send out a CONGRATS to Nathan Mounteer (from Spork) who took a seat in the Senate! posted 3/14/08 @ 11:50 AM MST Well actually FOCUS had booths everywhere. I think the key in the victory had to do with the campaign posters and material. Tie-dye in nature is not a strong color because it uses too many colors. Teal is a solid color with strong contrast. The Spork posters were incredible but looked like album covers and did not use Campaign 101 tactics. Large full name, party name, solid color, easy to read from a distance, etc. Thats my view, but both had great material and concepts. Cheers. posted 3/06/08 @ 9:08 AM MST posted 3/14/08 @ 2:37 PM MST Is there anyway we can just re-elect Fuse to stay another year? That's what Focus was anyway....a weak attempt to copy every aspect of last year's victors. Anyway...thank you, SPORK, for not sending me 5 million text messages or forcing me to take shirts I nor any of my friends would really ever wear in public. Let's just enjoy these next two months of Fusism and then we can all close the book on the good days of ASUU... posted 3/14/08 @ 12:47 PM MST Focus had a strong campaign ran by an outstanding campaign team. They had solid ideas, and they were extremely organized. They were out on campus campaigning nonstop, even yesterday in the pouring rain. The Focus party worked extremely hard and together, and they deserve this victory. 5 Election Fanatic posted 3/14/08 @ 2:41 PM MST Ofa Pilivi •Vs It's crazy time. You all should realize that—though the current president thinks he should be able to do whatever he wants whenever he wants—there are checks and balances in this country that will keep it from turning into a "Socialist Die- • tatorship." And I hardly think Obama saying that parents should be parents and mind what their children are doing is usurping the role of parents and giving it to the government. I think we all know parents who think the best thing is to be their kids' non-judgemental best friend or leave their kids to their own devices while they work or have a social life. nofuseyoulose Focus!! U Daniel Focus ran one of the best campaigns since the Innovation Party back in 2001—Congratulations! Election time does the campus so much good! It increases school spirit and helps us discuss important issues that need to be addressed! US posted 3/14/08 @ 1:06 PM MST There is no discussion needed.... bar none the FOCUS campaign set the standard for future student campaigning. Not only were the candidates prepared, they were committed. Long hours of strategic planning and heart went into this election, and I commend this campaign's Ecab for being the backbone of administrating collective efforts. All in all, it just goes to show that with a big heart, experience and authenticity, any goal can prevail. % & Adam posted 3/06/08 @ 9:23 AM MST Please stop writing your opinions in this newspaper. You are making the school look bad. I heard Margaret Dayton was looking for an assistant though. You two would get along famously. You both say the dumbest s*** but at least you could give her some advice about her hair. a campaign know it all posted 3/14/08 @ 3:04 PM MST John posted 3/14/08 @ 2:44 PM MST No offense, I think the Focus party ran a mediocre at best campaign in an election where not too much effort was really needed to win. There is no way they set any sort of a standard for future campaigns, they had no new and innovative ideas that they ran on and their campaign strategies and ideas tried to painfully replicate those of the party that won last year. I believe it is completely false to say that they set the standard of any kind. Sorry, Focus, but you are unfortunately the victims of having to follow your predecessors who have done so much for this university and its students. The shoes are just too big to fill! -jr * .~m_ ..i^^^^-x—-**.. .-..^v,.^.., a.^,-..^-.,. •w randy redeman posted 3/14/08 @ 3:47 PM MST Jfe . ^ ^ M ^ Does anyone else find all the exuberance, back-slapping and high-fiving a bit odd considering that our presidentelect got votes from less than 10% of the University of Utah student body? H/ •k Clayton posted 3/14/08 @ 4:33 PM MST j posted 3/06/08 @ 11:33 AM MST "With nationalized health care, you will be told what kind of treatment you can get if you are sick" You mean that's what you get with an HMO and'free market health care. Better coverage my ass. Fuller (Auxier), albeit your parents still pay for your health care, when you graduate with that B.A. and you enter the professional world, you will soon realize that your options are very limited regarding any treatment. J Dumbazz fV Freedom Train I guess if you consider a campaign that cheats one of the best campaigns then you have your winner. Bottom line is that Focus committed tax fraud, they did whatever it took to win. I believe any one of the four campaigns from last year would have taken the victory this year. Looks like all the good ASUU did this year is not going to be replicated. I hope Patrick Reimherr and Jon Hayes , are happy with the line on the resume! ; . I liked the Innovation reference earlier. Probably the best run campaign ever on the U of U campus. I agree with John earlier. I think that Focus ran an okay election and did what was necessary to win. Last year's election was much more intense, and all four parties did more tabling than Focus did this year. And Focus is not FUSE of last year. Lots of their key candidates and organizers came from the FORWARD party. posted 3/06/08 @ 1:09 PM MST Maybe Fuller (Auxier) and other Republicans are really afraid of the poor/lower classes becoming smarter and taking over the country, eliminating the foul rich and all Republicans, conservatives, rush limburger, etc. Let's face it, a lot of people are really dumb, they need all the help they can get in raising their children. *\C.- All comments from www.daiiyutahchronicle.com. ^ ^ Online poll Who are you voting for in the upcoming ASUU elections? REALITY TV CROSSES TOO MANY LINES, PAPPAS SAYS NIEDRICH SAYS EASTER IS LOST continued from Page 5 continued from Page 5 those you care most about. The basic premise is this: "Is $100,000 enough to ruin every worthwhile relationship you have? Are you willing to tie your loved ones to a railroad track for personal gain?" It seems in American pop culture, money cannot only buy happiness, it's also worth destroying it. Still, as disgusting as "Moment of Truth" is, it is protected by the First Amendment. It's a shame revealing all the secrets of those who have made the unfortunate choice to care about you is what our founding fathers decided was worth protecting. "To Catch a Predator," on the other hand, is crossing a fine line. The press should report, and the police should convict. We are swimming in dangerous waters when each has an oar in his or her hand. Journalism is about seeking truth, not creating it. A journalist should treat their subjects as human beings, not faceless ratings. The public should be treated with compassion, not be destroyed for profit. Conradt is dead because of grotesque reporting. Let's hope that the exploitation dies with him. letters@chronicle.utah.edu 0 \ spend more time together with people we care about or doing good deeds? Or, bolder yet, perhaps give the money to charity or put it toward bettering our communities instead of buying each other things that will likely end up at D.I. a year from now? Who knows? I think we could do it, but it would take a serious paradigm shift and grassroots^ action to affect such change. In the mean time, if you are going to continue to buy material things for others in supposed celebration of •various holidays, I encourage you to at least learn the meanings behind the holidays , you buy junk for if you do not know the meanings already. If you're going to be a Peepeater, at least be an educated one. For the rest of us, the marshmallow-adverse so to speak, I urge us all to celebrate secular and religious holidays in non-commercial ways that recognize the meaning behind their observance. Ways that we can do this might be to donate money to a worthy cause in the name of a family member or make gifts and healthy snack treats instead of buying them. Just think: if everyone'. in America donated their "Peep funds" to one cause, there would be more than $750 million dollars annually that could be used to better '[ our world instead of growing our waistlines. As soon as America returns to celebrating holidays sucfi • as Easter because it's Easter •! and not because it's an excuse to buy things, you won't hear another Peep out of me. : * letters^ chronicle.utah.edu |
