Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Friday, March 14,2008 Hockey looks to the future Jason Peterson STAFF WRITER Technically, the season is over for the U hockey club, which played its last game on March 7 with a loss to BYU. But no one would know by watching the Skatin' Utes go to work this offseason. "We're really looking forward to the next season," said forward Mike Vrtis, who led the team in both goals (26) and assists (24) this season. "We won seven games this year after we won just one game last year, so we're on our way up." Indeed, the future looks bright for Utah, which will return with all of its core players except Greg Swenson, who is graduating. Swenson was second on the team with 20 assists, most of which were rerouted by Vrtis for an easy goal. "I think we had a really good attitude this whole season," Swenson said. "A lot of guys could've easily given up, but we kept fighting to the last game." The hockey program was reinstated at the U two sum- mers ago after a three-year hiatus stemming from violations of regulations set by the American Collegiate Hockey Association. The latest version of Ute hockey is completely made up of new players dedicated to return the program to prominence. "We've got a lot of young, talented guys on our team," Swenson said. "Once we mixed up the lines (in November), we just clicked and started playing better. This team is in good hands." Goalie Jason Petho, who backed up starter AJ. Boldan and was also largely responsible for bringing hockey back to the U, also plans on stepping down as a player. Petho will be spending the rest of this month looking for students to volunteer with running the hockey organization. The past two years, the players have taken on doubleduty with managerial and clerical tasks. "We're just looking for some hockey fans to help us run this team," Petho said. "Maybe students in business management or advertising, people who are looking to get some experience in their field of study." Petho said the positions— nine in all to be filled by the end of March—would be on a voluntary basis, but he is working with the school to ensure that those who volunteer would receive internship credit toward graduation. "For example, we need someone to manage our website," Petho said. "So anyone in website design could get credit for their major. Same with an advertising major who can promote our team." The Utes' roster for next season, is by no means set in stone. Vrtis said the team is planning to add some new blood with tryouts in July. "We were short-handed all year and I think because of that, we ran out of gas toward the end of a lot of games," Vrtis said. With the departures of Swenson and Petho, the U roster stands at just 14. Most teams have twice that number. "We hope a lot of guys who love to play hockey will come and try out for the team," Petho said. j.peterson@chronicle.utah.edu POSITIONS AVAILABLE FOR 2OO8 UTAH HOCKEY TEAM •President: Oversees the day-to-day operations including budgeting, scheduling, running the organization and setting goals to reach the next level of collegiate hockey. •Vice President: Assists the president with the team scheduling, traveling and giving aid to those within the team. •Executive Treasurer: Oversees team's budgeting and looks for future profitable ventures. •Executive Secretary: Aids the President, VP, and treasurer in their duties •Webmaster: Designs and maintains the hockey club's website, including possible online advertising •Game Day Manager: Directs and operates ticket sales, merchandising, concessions and in-game entertainment to create a profit for the club •Marketing/ Advertising Manager: Creates interest for the club on campus and in the community through fliers, commercials, and activities •Development Manager: Pursues funding for the club through alumni and local enterprises •Merchandising Manager: Promotes hockey club by designing and creating T-shirts, hoodies, hats, beanies, etc and oversees merchandise sales Putting out a student publication? Kim said she was already feeling a little anxious Monday. "Usually I don't get nervous or excited until Thursday or Friday morning," Kim said. To help offset last week's struggles and prepare for upcoming regional and national competition, head coach Greg Marsden changed up the practice routine. Normally, the team splits off into three or four groups and trains events simultaneously. This week, the whole team will spend some time taking turns performing the same event. "We're going to start doing a little more team stuff," Marsden said. The idea behind the new structure is to simulate more of a performance setting for his team during training sessions. "We're just trying to bring the two a little closer together where they're feeling a little more pressure in the gym and a little less pressure at meets." Now is most likely the best time to start doing that. A meet with Florida already has high stakes but maybe more so this season. Florida may be ranked No. 3 in the country, but they showed Feb. 15 against Louisiana State that they can be the best team in the nation on any given night. The Gators posted 11 scores of 9.90 or higher in earning a • score of 197.925, the highest score in women's gymnastics so far this season. The mark is also the third whighest in school history. Florida's performance was powered by four all-around performers (Amanda Castillo, Corey Hartung, Ashley Reed and Melanie Sinclair) posting at least a 39.350 each. But Florida knows that their incredible score only counted tjiat night, and each meet must be prepared for similarly. "They're looking at this season and each competition as a process," Faehn said. Utah is looking at last week's low score the same way. "It wasn't a compete disaster," senior Katie Kivisto said. "It's pretty good that that's our low point." The meet is set to begin at 5 p.m. MT. Going home Katie Kivisto gets to go home for Friday's meet. The Boca Raton, Fla., native expects to have some fans in the crowd. Florida meets average more than 7,000 in attendance, so any fans that Utah can get will help. , Kivisto is happy that both of her parents will be able to attend. She said her dad gets to go to a lot of meets, but her mom doesn't as often because of work conflicts. , }.gilbert@chronicle.utah.edu Get funding requests by emailing Jacob Sorensen at: j.sorensen@chronicle.utah.edu thanks to a Giddens driving layup. The attack also gave Nevill his fourth foul of the game. Unlike Utah's first meeting with New Mexico that also went to overtime, Nevill managed to stay in the game and provided Utah's offensive punch in overtime. Utah will now face No. 2 seed UNLV tonight on its home floor in the semifinals. Tipoff is scheduled for 10:05 p.m. MT. c.brunner@chronicle,utah.edu Return requests via email by 4 p.m. March 24,2008 for consideration by the Publications Council.
