Show Wednesday, October 25,2006 THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Utah driver's license, ID card get new look, security features TNI- ASSOCIATED PRESS Nannette Rolfe, Utah's director of driver licenses, talks about the state's new licenses and identification cards during a news conference Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2006, in West Valley City, Utah. WEST VALLEY CITY— Nearly five years since the last face-lift, officials displayed Utah's new driver's license, which will be horizontal or vertical based on a person's age and have other security features. Wallace Wintle, bureau chief in the Driver License Division, predicts the new license, as well as the new state identification card, will be "very difficult for counterfeiters." Among, the security features: an intricate, almost maze-like design that shifts the background from red to blue; writing that overlaps the portrait; printing that only appears when the license is turned in light. Drivers under age 19 will have vertical licenses, while New study sees rise in college volunteers Sara Davidson Iowa State Daily Iowa State U. AMES, Iowa—Despite the reputation of college students being lazy and concerned with partying, a recent study shows they may be more selfless than perceived. According to a study released Oct. 16 by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the number of college students who volunteer increased from 2.7 million to 3.3 million—nearly 20 percent—between the beginning of 2002 and the end of 2005. Shellie Orngard, executive director of the Volunteer Center of Story County, said national civic health over the last three years has declined significantly, but the area it has improved is the engagement of volunteering in young people, ages 18 to 24. "We can speculate that the catastrophic events of Sept. n and Hurricane Katrina have propelled young people to be more involved in the community," Orngard said. "Many are interested in doing something that can make a difference in the world around them." Susan Cross, associate professor of psychology, said these events, combined with the personal benefits associated with volunteering, may have contributed to the rise in numbers. "Good research has shown that volunteering leads to good feelings, wellbeing and better overall life satisfaction," she said. She said the addition of service learning projects in many curriculums of learning institutions within the last several years has also strongly influenced the resurgence in volunteerism. "Encouragement from many high schools gives students a passion for vol- trators recommends states change the look of their driver's license and state ID card every five years. A Utah driver's license, good for five years, typically could be renewed through the mail or the Internet, but that likely will end, forcing people to stand in line to get a new card, Wintle warned. Until older licenses expire, there will be three types in circulation: the old laminated version that went mostly unchanged for decades, the remodel offiveyears ago, and the new one announced Tuesday. By May 8, 2008, all states must comply with a federal law that created national standards for licenses, Wintle said. Garrett advises numerous campus organizations that promote volunteering in the community. The 10,000 Hours Show seeks to recruit and recognize community volunteers who contribute 10 hours to service with a free concert. Rachel Mullen, executive director of outreach for the 10,000 Hours Show, said she has seen a definite increase in the number of student volunteers over the last three years. "I think students now realize that they can actually make a difference by reaching out to someone they don't know," Mullen said. "It is very rewarding to know that you are selflessly lending your time and effort to give back to the university and community." UWire The Gateway Wedding Show Saturday. It's What We Outthinking.
