Running the table requires that kind of confidence out continued from Page 7 Former Ute Coach, of key players. The Broncos have got to believe that they have the talent of Ohio State or Florida, whether it's true or not. MonaStevens THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE tired cliche, but it's also true. In college football, there are no playoffs. One unfortunate game—even one untimely error—and the hopes of going to a BCS game are effec-. tively dashed. Boise State may need to do more than score more points than its opponents to impress pollsters. The Broncos need to reduce teams to bungling incompetents. "We're going to have to blow some teams out," Zabransky said, "but we're not concentrating about that. We're worried about scoring every time we touch the ball and stopping them on defense." "It's a long season," Zabransky said, "and you're going to get beaten up and you're going to have to battle through injuries. But being out there with your guys and getting some publicity like we do, we try to keep it positive and be able to handle everything; but at the same time, we've got to focus on the game that we're playing." Webb pitched in an additional seven in the winning effort, BYU outside hitter Chelsea Goodman opened up the third game with a trio of kills, and the Cougars jumped out to a 7-3 lead. Utah fought its way back into the frame with strong outside play of its own and tied the game at 10. BYU then went on an 82 run behind a plethora of kills by Goodman, giving the Cougars an 18-12 lead. Utah closed that six-point margin to two later in the contest, putting together a 4-0 run to bring the score to 19-17. The Cougars expanded that lead to seven later in the game behind numerous Rachel Dyer kills, and the Utes were never able to recover, losing 30-21. "BYU came out strong in game three, and it took us a while to respond, but every match has its ebbs and flows and I thought we handled it well," Launiere said. Webb set the tone early for the Utes in game four, netting four kills in the game's first eight points to give Utah a 6-2 lead. The Utes built on that lead with strong outside play from Salvo and Lovell, widening the margin to six, 12-6. The Cougars scratched their way back into the competition, however, closing the margin to three, 13-10. From there it was all Utah, which pieced together run after run behind solid defense to win the game and match with ease, 30-18. Lovell led a four-pronged offensive attack for the Utes on the night, racking up a match-high 18 kills. Webb proved to be Utah's most efficient threat, collecting 17 kills on .382 hitting. Salvo and Baird also picked up 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Freshman setter Sydney Anderson also had an impressive outing, picking up 57 assists, 13 digs and .750 hitting (six kills, eight attacks, no errors). On defense, Dangerfield led the Utes from the back row as she recorded her first 20-dig match of the season. Salvo also pitched in, recording 12 digs for the U. The Cougars' biggest offensive threat, outside-hitter Erica Lott, sat out the match with a back injury, but Goodman stepped up in her stead, netting 18 kills for the Y. Outside-hitter Rachel Dyer also added 13 kills on a matchhigh .391 hitting percentage in the losing effort. The Utah defense stymied its opponent once again, holding the Cougars to a mere .195 hitting average in the match. "Our defense has been winning matches for us. We've been beating opponents with it, but I felt like our offense came around tonight. We improved a lot there," Launiere said. The Utes will try to continue improving tomorrow when they travel to Pocatello to take on Idaho State in a non-league match. c.brunner@ chronicle.utah.edu Www.dailyutQficHronicie.com www.dailyutahchronide. com -www.dailyutahchronicle.com -www.daiiyutahchronide.com -www.dailyutahchronide.com -www, dailyutahchronide.com - |
