"He loved to walk, so whatever the weather was you had to have the right clothes, the right coats, umbrellas, whatever you needed," Young said. "He'd come in and say, 'Whose case is such and such?' I'd say it's mine, and he'd say 'OK, let's go.' We'd grab our coats and start walking around the block and talking about these cases and outlining these ideas." In addition to his extensive interaction with clerks at the office, Rehnquist also held annual reunions for former clerks. The current clerks would put on a skit, mocking the justices—including Rehnquist—and things that had occurred that term. The following day, there would be a barbecue preceded by a very competitive croquet game during which Rehnquist would walk around with a rulebook. "Over time, we became convinced it had no real rules in it," Young said. "But he would speak out of it with great authority in ways defining rules that always benefited him. We became very suspicious after a while what was actually in that book. It always seemed to favor the move he had just made." It was at one of these reunions that Young first met another of the a BSA from the U's modern dance program," Eileen Wingfield, a U modern dance alumna, said. For that reason the department works hard to stay at the top, requiring applicants to audition before entrance to the program. justice's clerks—John Roberts—a judge whom Young said he has enormous respect for and who he expects to succeed Rehnquist. "John is one of the best lawyers I've ever met," Young said. "I think he's very, very smart and has huge appreciation for the court...And I think he understands the value of the way Rehnquist ran the court, so I suspect a lot of it will look like it has in the past." Rehnquist the family man This week, the media showed images of Roberts being inundated with questions from a panel of senators and congressmen while his children and wife watched. Young said Rehnquist preached and practiced this family-conscious mentality from what he saw as a clerk. He recalled one specific piece of advice the justice offered regarding family life. "I know I didn't understand the significance of it at the time,..but he told me early on, 'Whatever you do, spend a lot of time with your kids because they grow up and leave the house long before they actually physically leave the house.1 He said your time with them is a lot less than you actually think," Young said. "And I thought, here I am dealing with someone who is a justice on the Supreme Court, who is not giving me advice on how to become famous but telling me that at the end of the day all this stuff is interesting, but it passes and all that really matters is family." Young said Rehnquist's closed funeral, which was attended by the The department also maintains a rigorous curriculum and hosts renowned professionals for lectures and special classes, Wingfield said. But other students say the rankings had nothing to do with their decision to attend the U. Many picked it for its likes of Bush, Cheney and other senior officials, reflected Rehnquist's focus on family matters. "It was about him the father, the grandfather and a friend and a mentor with very little about his jurisprudential legacy. This was one of the most powerful men in America for 30 years, and it was all games he played with his family and trips he took, the fact that he never missed dinner with his family," Young said. "His daughter summed it up best. She said, 'To say, as many people have, that his family came first is misleading because that implies that something came second.'" When Young clerked for Rehnquist, he was just starting a family of his own. He and his wife, Suzan, were raising a son, Stewart, who was just 2 years old at the time. The two would often join Young at the court for lunch, and Rehnquist would invite them in to his office. "He almost always would find out ; they were coming and invited Sue to come in and say hello. Stewart • would come in...and he'd throw a ! ping-pong ball around the office, and the justice would retrieve it," Young said with a chuckle. "I don't think I ever had a conversation with him after I clerked where he didn't ask about Sue and the kids and how they were doing and things like that." Young said when friends are approaching death, "You always try to prepare yourself, but (Rehnquist's death) hit harder than I'd antici-, pated." sgehrke@ chronicle.utah.edu surroundings. "All I looked at were the mountains; I came here for the snow," Gina Varni, a freshman in education, said. Utah residents often choose the U for convenience and price with total disregard for rankings. "If finance was not an issue, I probably would have made the decision of which college to attend based on the rankings," said David Leucke, a freshman in biology from Logan. emerono@ chronicle.utah.edu For Sale I found my speakers in The Chrony Classifieds.
