April 2; 2:00 p.m. The Lab/Studio 115 Theatre is breaking new ground with the Utah premiere of Eric Coble's comedy, "Bright Ideas," directed by U graduate Whit Hertford, opening this Thursday at the Performing Arts Building. The show follows the ambitions of parents Josh and Gen as they try to get their 3-year-old son, Mac, into the best pre-school possible—"Bright Ideas Child Development Academy." The couple tries everything to get him into this upscale school—they even put their son on the waiting list for Bright Ideas the minute he was born. What follows is a hilarious, albeit somewhat dark, entertaining and enjoyable scheme of how far Josh and Gen are willing to go to get their son into Bright Ideas Academy and keep themselves there. "If Tim Burton had created 'Rugrats' and used 'Sweeney Todd,' 'Desperate Housewives' and the Scottish play ['Macbeth'] as inspiration [that would be Bright Ideas]," Hertford said. The play loosely follows Shakespeare's "Macbeth" in its telling, but one does not Dance "Sounds In Motion" Presented by the Utah Regional Ballet Jeanne Wagner Theatre @ Rose Wagner Center (138 W. Hertford said that when first reading the play, he was "drawn to its speed and imagination," and likens it to comedies such as "The Office" and "Arrested Development." The production is unique in the theatre department because it is entirely student produced, directed, designed and built, unlike most department shows. "Bright Ideas" was chosen as this year's production through a voting process sponsored by the theatre department's Student Advisory Committee. Hertford was then voted to be the show's director from a list of others. Hertford brings, not only a wonderful style to the piece, but his own past experience of some of the characters in it, as well as the support of all his designers and a "stellar cast that is willing to take huge risks," Hertford said. Five of the seven actors in the show play multiple characters, which he notes are "so detailed and originally quirky that this play is like a roller coaster." As funny and exaggerated as "Bright Ideas" is, it does point to an issue of who really raises the children of today. Is it the parents or is it the books, magazines, television shows and handbooks in the driver's seat? The production is fun, wild and a joy to see. It's worth noting how rare it is to see comedy done as well as it is in the Lab's production of "Bright Ideas" opening Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Lab/ Studio 115 Theater in the Performing Arts Building. kstanfa@ chronicle.utah.edu TODAY! Back at Hickville—not to get started on a rant here, but why is Matthew McConaughey such hot shiznit? Sure he's good looking, but so are plenty of Hollywood actors. He parlayed a five-minute role in "Boys on the Side" to a manufactured A-List career. He's the film version of Ashlee Simpson, only Calendar wouldn't mind seeing her playing bongos in public while nude.
