Show Daily Utah Chronicle Friday, March 25,2005 ABORTION continued from page 1 cans, would the government be staying out of race, or would'they be taking the side of those who wish to lynch African-Americans?" Anderson asked. Democrat Jiro Johnson said the comments were insensitive to Jews who endured the Holocaust and "hundreds of thousands upon millions of people right now who are starving, dying, being chopped up and butchered in Sudan who are actually succumbing to a genocide." "I don't think you can draw that parallel to abortion," Johnson added. "The Constitution doesn't provide any type of legal protection as an unaborted person being an actual person." Anderson said the Democrats owe an apology to "13 million African-American babies since 1973 who have been aborted, which is 35 percent of the African-American population inside the United States. If that is not genocide, then nothing constitutes genocide." He added that an unborn fetus should constitute a person. Boy, is that the truth. With March Madness in the air (mainly because of going back to school), I've realized how difficult it must be for teams having to play far away from their universities (such as Pittsburgh playing in Boise). On the other hand, the most valuable lesson learned from this year's tournament is the importance and value of "home cookin.'" When I found out that Illinois fans would not have to travel more than four hours by car to watch the Fighting Illinis, I began to get curious as to where else home cookin' can be found in life and the advantages it brings. During the week before . Spring Break, there was controversy over The Chronicle's endorsement of the Students First party. Speculators claimed that the reason it was done was because Ali Hasnain (president elect) was a former editor for the paper. Although The Chronicle gave a thorough explanation for its endorsement, I still feel there was a little home cookin' involved and that Students First edge of the resources at the LGBT center. "I think it's important for people to know that there are these safe environments, these safe zones that exist here on campus. And that campus is not a hostile place toward lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, intersexed individuals...all these things are welcomed and even embraced," said Derick Stephensen, a LGBT student. {1-15 Frontage Rd.) $9.99 582-5700 BALLET STUDENT CONCERT continued from pagei Lowe and his vice president Bobby Harrington chose Johnston from more than 69 other applicants after a month-long interview process. Her experience in programming, track record with former employers and having her first priority as student development is what set her apart, Lowe said. Applicants ranged from people with many years of professional experience to people right out of college. "Amanda fell in the middle. She had the professional experience necessary, but not too much to the point where she would have to do things her own way," Sehere said. Sehere also said that Johnston can interact with students in a way the others couldn't. "She will speak up for students and let the students be in control," Sehere said. Johnston graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Psychology. At BYU and Rick's College, she was in charge of organizing student events and leadership trainings. pmuir@chronicle.utah.edu With the purchase of a Large Soda.
