The Aztecs (7-17) won Friday's series opener 9-3 at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Tim O'Brien launched a two-run shot in the first to spark an offensive onslaught against Ute starter Jason Price (1-4), who took the loss. The Utes (7-13) countered with a few bombs of their own in the second game on Saturday. Ryan Khoury, Adam Frank and Doug Beck all hit homers, giving starter Matt Crockett (24) all the support he needed. The senior did not walk a batter, allowing eight hits in 6 2/3rd innings of work. Sunday did not bode as well for the Utes, who conceded three unearned runs in a 5-3 loss to the Sun Devils. Only one Ute, Trevor Eastman (2-4, RBI) had multiple hits in a contest that saw a number of squandered opportunities. Starter Bryce Freed (1-2) went only three innings in the loss. The Utes open up a three-game series against BYU on Thursday in Provo. The U softball team (9-14) went 1-1 on Sunday in rain-shortened action at the Stanford Tournament in Palo Alto, Calif. Two games on Saturday were cancelled due to rain, but the weather relented long enough for the Utes to squeeze in a 3-2 win over Princeton and a 6o drubbing at the hands of Stanford. The win over the Tigers in the early game snapped the Utes' three-game losing streak. Brianna Gourdin {6-6) went the distance, yielding three runs on only four hits and two walks. Bryanne Durrence and Kate Nygaard both knocked home runs for the Utes, who only tallied four hits in the victory. Their sputtering offense hit even harder times against the Cardinal's Becky McCullough, who allowed one hit and no walks in six innings before Danika Dukes came on for a perfect seventh. Lindsie Nielsen (3-7) was pounded for all six runs in four innings before Gourdin came on in relief. The U's home opener is Friday against Utah Valley State College at 3 p.m. 1 Monday, March 21, 2005 HO AVENUE LAUNDRY No. 05 20 04 02 11 03 13 51 :es 60 Miners 54 Min.
