Show Daily Utah Chronicle Friday, Januray 14, 2005 Ray Giacoletti Head Coach First season at Utah Minot State, 1985 Career coaching record 130-86 Coach Giac has won over the early season detractors, and has gotten his team to bounce back after an early season disaster at Utah State. Giacoletti has unlocked the talent of Markson and Bogut. and while still unproven, is on the road to being another great hire by Chris Hill. 0 2 0 Bryant Markson Forward Junior 6'6", 190 lbs. Monrovia, Calif. For a while, Markson was suffering from Alex Smith syndrome. The coaches always called him talented, but never actually played him. How given the opportunity. Bryant won't be goinq back to the bench any lime soon. The high-flyer is known tor his dunks, but it's his perimeter play and de tense that has Giacoletti singing his praises, # 3 0 Chris Jackson Center Junior 6'I1245 lbs. Los Alamos, NM Big Red is definitely big, but has been looking pretty green, especially on the offensive end. His back may not be completely healed, but he still adds a big body in the post. 0 4 Andrew Bogut Center/Forward Sophomore TO", 245 lbs. Melbourne, Australia The Bogut (or all-America chatter is reaching a fever pitch. There are nights when the big Aussie threatens to reach 20 points and 20 rebounds, and if he stuck around another year would probably average just that. But the big man is already ready for the NBA and has been mentioned as a potential No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft. 0 2 Marc Jackson Guard Senior 61". 175 lbs. Salt Lake City, Utah If Bogut weren't in the picture, Jackson would definitely be the team MVP. He has caught fire lately, connecting on 14-18 threepointers over the last three games. He normally brings the ball up, but with a season high of six assists, he's really more of a two guard. i 3 811 Tim Drisdom Guard Junior 6 T , 203 lbs. Artesia. Calif. A preseason injury kept Drisdom from playing 100 percent early on, but lately he's gotten back on track. He might not be the outside marksman that Marc Jackson is. but lately he has been making opponents pay for leaving him open. On the bench **#**"* 0 3 Jermalne Calvin Guard Freshman 5*9". 177 lbs. Tempe, Ariz. 013 Richard Chaney Guard/Forward Junior 6'4". 195 lbs. Los Angeles, Calif. #15 Chris Grant Guard Freshman 67", 192 lbs. Salt Lake City, Utah 0 5 Justin Hawkins Forward Sophomore 6'5", 220 lbs. Anaheim, Calif. 010 Casey Iverson Guard Junior 6'1185 lbs. Salt Lake City. UT An early season bench warmer, Calvin's quickness and tenacity have caught the coaches eye. The result is more playing time for the little spark plug. Rumor has it that Jermaine can throw down a mean dunk, but he has yet to show off his hops in-game. V.P. is in the middle of a stint on the injured list with a broken hand. When he comes back, he will have a tough battle trying to wrest his starting job back from Markson. The walk-on earned his first start in the game against UNLV, but was only on the floor lor five minutes. His early season claim to fame is hitting the "Chalupa shot" against Whitworth, putting the Utes over the 80-point plateau and sending every fan home with a taco. He's shown some flashes of brilliance, but his bad back has been a hindrance. He claims he's 100 percent, so hopefully Hawk can return to the form he showed in the Great Alaska Shootout, where he averaged 14 points and 5.6 rebounds. The junior transfer adds depth to the backcourt. but with Calvin emerging, Iverson has spent more and more time on the bench. His passing skills are impressive, so he should get more playing time once conference play wears on. HI 0 5 1 Jonas Langvad Forward Sophomore 6 T . 230 lbs. Skovlunde, Denmark 0 5 0 Luke Nevfll Center Freshman 7'0" 250 lbs. Perth, Australia It's been a year and a half, but it looks like the Dane is starting to figure things out. Giacoletti has been pleading with Langvad to shoot more, and even though his shot still needs some work, he has started to show why the coaches call him the best shooter on the team. "He's going to be something special," Bogut says about his countryman. Heavily recruited out of high school, Nevill is still very raw, but has improved greatly since the preseason. Bogul is impressed at his increased aggressiveness. X if' IL// If; 031 Austin Robison Forward Freshman 6'6", 185 lbs. Sandy, Utah 0 3 2 Jake Schmidt Forward Freshman 6'8" 240 lbs. Thermopolis, Wyo. Robison is red-shirting, but should play a birj part in years to come. The Jordan High alumnus has a huge vertical leap and a nice shot. One of Majerus' last recruits, he hasn't played often, but has good potential at the four spot. He is still looking for his iirst college bucket. • i |
