Show Daily Utah Chronicle Thursday, December 9,2004 QThe Fletch Fetch Visual feast Four music DVDs sure to inspire aural/visual pleasure Rooney Spit & Sweat Geffen Records Something Corporate Live at The Ventura Theatre Drive-Thru Records Three and a half out of five stars Four out of five stars Rooney set out to play good old rock 'n' roll. It just so happened that they played it in a carport beside Los Angeles' sunny beach scenery. The product? An amalgam of Beach Boys-esque surf sweetness, garage-rock revival and 1960s rock swagger. The band's DVD debut, "Spit & Sweat," minces montages of lo-fi tomfoolery that chronicle Rooney's humble origins with tracks from the band's live set at The Wiltern Theatre on the July 18, 2004. Amid a sea of tight denim, Technicolor polyester, long hair, spit and sweat, Spit & Sweat effectively embodies Rooney's Cali-rock majesty. NAS continued from page 8 The conceptual digression, "The Makings of a Perfect B****" really doesn't mesh, especially preceding the delightful, introspective "Getting Married." He calls for "the brilliance of Maya Angelou" in his future wife. Or a killer milkshake. That'll work, too. Olu Dara returns on "Bridging the Gap," playing the trumpet, harmonica and singing the delta-blues. Nas, a high school dropout, triumphantly rhymes "Cause none of them would like my style / read more books than the curriculum profile / 'said, 'Mr. Jones, please come get your child / Cause he's writing mad poems and his verses are wild.'" Listeners might be surprised The Goo Goo Dolls Live In Buffalo: July 4th, 2004 Warner Brothers Four out of five stars Two out of five stars Rufus Wainwright is huge. His following is huge, his stage show is huge, even the diamond necklace he dons on his DVD is huge, As "Want Two" follows the icon through the streets of his hometown, San Francisco, attracting praises such as "Rufus Wainwright is God." Along the way, the world plays witness to a side of Rufus that is not so huge: his ego. Wainwright walks his way through a 20-song set at The Fillmore as well, seeming equally comfortable on stage as on the Frisco sidewalks. Relaying between piano and guitar, while commanding the microphone, Wainwright's humility shines. Despite his huge talent, "Want Two" puts Wainwright in perspective. "Live at the Ventura Theatre" opens with the members of Something Corporate bowling, picking up laundry, boarding trains, buying drumsticks and hanging out. It ends after an hour and a half of honest piano-heavy pop rock and roll. It seems that despite all the hype, Orange County's Something Corporate is comprised of normal guys...normal guys that put on one hell of a rock and roll show. The band's live performance shines in its open-hearted honesty and light-hearted antics, and in turn the DVD pumps a Hfeblood of genuine, good-hearted fun. "Live at the Ventura Theatre" proves that not everyone in the O.C. wallows in self-righteous self-pity. Thank God. to find a secret bonus track on Street's Disciple...unless, of course, you've been alive for the last three months and live on the East Coast. That is to say. "Thief's Theme," the album's first single (and bonus track), has been out for months. It effectively tidies things up with another prototypical Nas classic, looping familiar Hlmatic catchphrases as chorus on top of classic Iron Maiden riffs. Nas' skillful displays showcase the advantage of writing rhymes in the studio with familiar producers (L.E.S., Saleem Remi, Chucky Thompson, and Nas himself take all the production credit on the entire double LP) and Street's Disciple marks the return of the first-person observations through which Nas truly Rufus Wainwright "Want Two" Geffen Records shines. Everything is either a personal narrative or a singular, subjective voice that does not vary or strive to conform to trendy themes. If there's any major complaint about Street's Disciple, it's that this could have been an absolutely incredible single album. It is, however, relatively consistent for a double, and the highlights are bright enough to make this the best hip-hop album of the year for many East Coast-inclined rap enthusiasts. Nas no longer insists on being an asinine caricature of a hardcore drug dealer. Maybe his material at 31 years old isn't as interesting as it was at 19, sitting on street corners, but Nas still manages to reach his potential as a "real" artist on his new album. Street's Disciple is no traditional thunderbolt, but it packs enough power to spark some Christmas Phillies as folks kick back and relax to one of the best releases of 2004. Matthew Piper From simple punk rock beginnings to megasuper-ultra pop stardom, The Goo Goo Dolls have rounded the bases in the rock world. "Live In Buffalo" sees the Dolls heading home in glory, but as they hit the stage to an enormous crowd, backed by an even more enormous stage spectacle—on the 4th of July no less—these Buffalo boys seem strangely minute compared to their pyrotechnic hype. The Goo Goo Dolls may be pop idols in the public eye, but "Live In Buffalo's" behindthe-scenes features show they posses no pop egos and are not suited for pop excess. Keep it simple, Goo—that's what you do best.
