Show THE Literary PPA A Hews. forest, by lake and stream, have been varied, while his recollections DOOYOO LIVI I ™ Pe. OT FAR from the iq eastern extremity ps of Long Island lives an aged fisherman named Isaac McLellan, who enjoys the distinction of haying written poetry —and good poetry, too—long present generation of <i before the writers was born. He is now 90 years old, but is hale and hearty, and retains a goodly share of both bodily and mental vigor. As early as 1830 he published among which a volume was of ‘‘ The ARGUS... poems, Death of Napoleon,’? which was familiar to every schoolboy of the last generation. Its opening stanza will recall it to memory: Wild was the night, yet a wilder night Hung round the soldier’s pillow, In his bosom there raged a farcst fight Than the fight on the wrathful billow. Another, almost as widely known and extensively quoted, from the of emi- nent sportsmen would fill an entertaining volume. Bi BL Mr. Kenneth Grahame is the author of ‘‘ Pagan Papers,’’ ‘‘The Golden Age,’’ and other sketches. He has been called the ‘‘happy minstrel of childhood,”’ though his work is read and appreciated not alone by children. He remembers very little of himself worth setting down. He says: ‘‘T am Scottish, of course; fullblooded, too, but my country and I parted early, with feelings of mutual respect.’’ He says he left Scotland| at the age of 6 or 7, carrying with him a kilt and a Scotch accent. ‘*The latter I imprudently took with me to boarding-school, at the age of 9, but after being severely kicked for it, I concluded it was a luxury I could not afford to keep up. And now, though I can pick my way through a kilyard novel better than most, the world may be relieved from any anxiety lest I should produce one.’’ That-is quite a relief! Scotch novels are beginning to bore one as much as the Napoleonic craze in literature. ee John Boyle O’Reilly has written 13 pass into history as did the ‘“‘ blue glass’’ craze of years ago. The latest Bostonian idea is that literary people must not eat breakfast. It did not originate in Boston ; it was started by a Dr. Dewey of Meadville, Penn., who professes to have discovered that breakfast is the cause of all sorts of diseases and has written a book purporting to explain his theory. Boston has received the new~idea with open arms, and has proceeded to cultivate it. Bostonians are literary; some of the most elderly and therefore most literary of them have ciaimed that their minds work more clearly when they do not eat breakfast. It has been explained by cer- tain historians and philosophers that the reason for the excellence of the literary classics is that the authors were poor and hungry. Who has not thought of some radiant genius, confined within the limits of a garret, and eating a crust, while heaven-born thoughts came to him, imploring utterance? Going without breakfast is a revival of old Grub street. If this theory were carried to its logical conclusion, authors would write better if they did not eat anything. The public may be entirely willing that a number of self-styled authors starve themselves to death. ; Passage, Songs of the Orient and Occident.’’ With her charming descriptive powers she guides the traveler through Egypt, Italy, Switzerland and France. — * * * Mrs. Oliphant’s new monograph is about completed and will be published. under the title of. ‘‘ Jeanne D’Are,’’ as she prefers that to the usual name of Joan of Are. It will be one of her series of ‘‘ Heroes of the Nation.’’ * * x Mrs. Basil Holmes is writing a book upon the doleful subject : ‘‘ The London Burying Grounds.’’ She will give the antiquarian details of burying grounds in all ages, and the treatise will be a historical feature of London. | .
