Show 4 December 1996 Tumbleweed & Sagebrush Ever wonder who writes the titles for Warren Miller films? After 40 years, wouldn’t you think that “Endless Winter’ and “Steep and Deep” would cy a little old? Ever look-up ‘timeless’ in the dictionary? Do it and you’ll find the cae of a Warren Miller ski film. And for those of you who missed the opportunity last month to see “Snowriders” in Abravenal Hall, all I can say is don’t miss it next year! I never miss a Warren Miller film. The formula developed by the pioneer film maker in the 40’s works the same today under the direction of his progressive and marketing-minded son Kurt. But if you thought it played well at the decrepit Tower Theater or a ‘U’ classroom, you had to experience Abravenal Hall. | Warren Miller came to town big-time this year, forsaking the small classroom theater for Salt Lake City’s finest. The corporate premier brought “Snowriders”’ to the big screen, blasting out Blues Traveler and the Counting Crows to scenes of snowboarders carving their way literally endlessly down steep chutes on: Alyeska, tubers blasting uncontrolled down the mountainside, and Park City’s own Sean Smith and his U.S. Freestyle Teammates bumping and flipping down a mogul run. Somehow, it was hard to visualize Joseph Silverstein raising his baton in front of the Salt Lake Symphony on this very stage. It is truly amazing how the Miller crews (including Ogden’ s own Gary Nate behind the camera) continues to turn out stellar, dynamic films. Just ask any of the 4,500 earring-wearing, screaming “Snowrider” fans. According to Tom Welch, president and chief executive officer of SLOC, the amount contracted with the Japanese networks for the 2002 Winter Games TV rights “came in at the value we projected, primarily through the efforts of President (Juan Antonio) Samaranch. We are very appreciative of his sensitivity to our financial requirements and applaud his efforts on behalf of Salt Lake’s Olympics.” Welch also lauded the efforts of Dr. Un Yong Kim, Korea, IOC television rights negotiator for Asia, who also played a major role in helping to meet SLOC’s requirements. The SLOC president noted the agreement was m line with what the Japanese TV networks paid for the rights to televise the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. According to President Samaranch, the contract was awarded to the Japan Pool because of its experience . and lessly as you have for years and years of Warren Miller films. “The lessons learned from the mountains are beyond any textbook and run deeper than memory,” writes Warren Miller Skiworld publisher Steve Marcus. “A powder day in the trees ... is like life itself.” If you needed any motivation for skiing and sinned ‘Snowriders’ will take care of that.
