in Poll following omIng la Is an interesting history of mine rescue cars since 1914 the bureau of mines has been operating nine mine rescue cars each car cai having headquarters in some one of the more important mining districts of the united states the majority of these cars operated in coal mining districts only one car in tact fact operated in a metal min ing district exclusively these old cars were old pullmans remodeled to meet the requirements of a mine rescue car in july of 1916 1111 congress congre finally authorized the construction of new all steel cars for the services of the bureau of mines three cars ears were to be built each year tor for three sue sul years or nine cars in all the type of car required for the work was designed in the office of the calt t mining engineer and mine safety engineer the first cars were build last may 1917 they have been designated sureau bureau of minee cars 1 2 and 5 car I 1 Is the first car completed on may 1st and has its headquarters at reno ne vada and will operate in utah nevada and california car r no awill 2 will have its headquarters at raton new mexico and will oper ate in the southwestern states car no awill 6 will have its headquarters at butte montana and will III operate in the northwestern states it Is to be espe cape noted tha thit t the first thre cars have been sent to the tar far west and this marks the tile beginning of more extensive activities in metal mining milling districts As above noted new cars will not be called mine rescue cars as here tolore but bureau of mines cars no 1 2 etc each of an pump and I 1 inde oxygen storage cly inder mine rescue lamps lifeline etc the arst all equipment consists of first aid cabinets band age splints burgeons surgeons emergency chest stretchers etc ete the engineers equipment consists of I 1 eiers v feasible device for elamin atlon of mines from a standpoint of sanitation efficiency and safety in eluding apparatus for analyze ing lug mine gases
