The Wolf Creek Foundation sponsors activities and events to enrich and strengthen the quality of life in our community, particularly for military members and their families. The Foundation’s primary mission is hosting weekend retreats for military families that have a parent either about to deploy or just returning from deployment. This fall will mark the 40th retreat to take place in Ogden Valley. Through a partnership with Hill Air Force Base, the Foundation sponsors these retreats twice a year, where military families relax, connect, and develop skills that help the entire family cope with deployments. At these retreats, each child receives a bear with a recording of their deploying parent’s voice. While the parent is overseas the child can squeeze the bear’s paw and hear their parent’s message of love whenever they are in need. Meals, lodging and entertainment, along with dedicated programming for adults and children are offered at no cost to the family. Carlos & Harley’s is excited to contribute to this worthwhile cause by donating 10% of all sales to the Wolf Creek Foundation through a special event on Wednesday, September 21. Reach out to Zach at 801.745.TACOS to make your reservation in advance, a reservation is required for parties over 6 people. We look forward to having you help us support those that sacrifice so much for the freedoms we enjoy. Even after the event, Carlos and Harley’s will continue to support the Wolf Creek Foundation by donating a portion of sales each quarter. You can offer continued support by purchasing a bear or simply eating an amazing meal prepared by Chef Luis. Bears are available for purchase at Carlos and Harley’s and qualify as a tax-deductible donation. You can learn more at wolfcreekfoundation. com and carlosandharleys.com. TFNU Author Dinner Returns to Timbermine SeptemberDeVotos 30 was the first By Ron Thornburg, Author Dinner Committee Chair Bernard DeVoto—the most famous Ogdenite you’ve probably never heard of—and his wife Avis, will be the topic of conversation when the Trails Foundation’s Author Dinner returns this fall. Nate Schweber will discuss his new book, This America of Ours: Bernard & Avis DeVoto and the Forgotten Fight to Save the Wild at the Sept. 30 event to be held at Timbermine Restaurant in Ogden. The book is a dual biography of the DeVotos, who Schweber describes as champions of public lands and great food. The Author Dinner is part of a year-long commemoration of Bernard DeVoto who was born in Ogden 125 years ago on January 11, 1897. Schweber’s book tells the story of the DeVotos’ public crusade to prevent millions of acres of Western public lands from being sold off for grazing and mining and efforts to tear down the National Park Service. Their opponents were Nevada Sen. Pat McCarran; his allies, J. Edgar Hoover and Joseph McCarthy. As the DeVotos struggled to stay solvent after Bernard was blacklisted by multiple magazines, he and Avis attracted powerful friends. They included Utah forester Chet Olsen, landscape photographer Ansel Adams, book publisher Alfred Knopf, novelist Wallace Stegner, and the woman who would become Avis’ best friend, Chef Julia Child. Utahn to win a Pulitzer Prize for his history Across the Wild Missouri, which was part of a trilogy that documented the discovery, exploration, and settlement of the West. He also was a novelist, leading authority on Mark Twain, and editor of Lewis and Clark’s journals. He used his column in Harper’s magazine, “The Easy Chair,” to advocate for protection of wild lands in the West. Schweber is a journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times, Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown,” and other publications. His conservation articles won awards from the Outdoor Writers Association of America in 2015 and 2018. In 2020, a ProPublica series he contributed to win the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. Artists and photographers participating include Nila Jane Autry, Terrece Beesley, Kate Bruce, Jerry Hancock, Patricia Hansen, Daniel Henriksen, Michael Manfull, Elizabeth Robbins, J Steven Robertson, Michelle Scriber, and Linda Lee Shimmin with work on exhibit in the Main Gallery. The work of Utah plein air artists will be featured in the Carriage House Gallery. These artists’ works will remain on display through September 30, 2022. Most of the artists represented in the exhibit have shared that they find inspiration in the natural beauty of Utah and the Wasatch Mountains. Daniel Hendriksen explains “I have the great fortune to live in a part of the world where natural beauty is abundant. My love of these visual gifts, developed early in life, has led me to explore photography as a means of sharing my personal experiences with other.” Elizabeth Robbins states “As a child my grandmothers would help me identify various wildflowers. This is where my love of flowers began. I still have the book where I pressed and categorized wildflowers that my paternal grandmother helped me with.” “As a teen” Michael Manfull say “my interest in visual arts flourished after I received a small camera as a gift allowing me to capture the world as I perceived it. This was one of many events that led to my degree in Fine Arts from the University of Utah.” Kate Bruce calls herself “a contemporary expressionist painter, a colorist who creates expressionist paintings inspired by nature.” She continues “I work in a loose, intuitive style and are known for my florals and use of vibrant color.” The Eccles Art Center’s Plein Air exhibit in the Carriage House Gallery is competitive, and open to professional and amateur artists interested in creating works outdoors, on-site not in a studio. The boundaries were established for artists to capture the historic architecture of Ogden and to explore the natural beauty of Weber County. Local art collectors are invited to view or add one of these works to their private collection. The Art Center’s gallery hours are Monday thru Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission to exhibits is complimentary. For more information, visit ogden4arts.org. |
