Show Volume XXIX Issue X The Ogden Valley News Page 5 September 1, 2022 Local Writer Releases Newest Book: Monastery Mornings Earns Gold Quill Ghosts of the High Uintas Award from League of Utah Writers Local author Joe Jennings has recently published the fifth book in the “Sam and Gunny K9 Adventure Series.” Like his other books, the main characters of Ghosts of the High Uintas are search and rescue dogs, and most of the action centers on a search mission. This time much of the story is set in the rugged high Uinta mountains, just a short drive from Ogden Valley. In real life, Joe has been a member of Great Basin K9 Search and Rescue for the past fifteen years, and he and his dogs have been on over 85 search missions, so he knows what he’s writing about. Here’s a brief description of what you’ll read in “Ghosts of the High Uintas.” When two young people disappear into the high and rugged terrain of the Uinta Mountains of northern Utah, a search and rescue mission is launched. Sam Webber and his new search dog Stretch find the body of one of the missing people, but that find creates as many questions as answers. Why were they there? What happened? And most importantly, where is the other missing person? To answer these questions, Sam, Stretch, and the rest of their team must search not only into the mountains but also into the past. The team will battle the mountains, the weather, a fanatical religious cult, and a raging wildfire to find the truth. But they won’t be alone. They’ll get some help from an unexpected source—the Ghosts of the High Uintas. Ghosts of the High Uintas and the other four books in the series are available in Kindle and paperback at Amazon and Goodreads. It combines gymnastics tumbling, acrobatic lifts, pyramid lifts (like the one Catie is on top of), aerial tosses, and choreographed skills team routines. The sport emerged in 2009 and is purely competitive not to be confused with cheerleading. Some meets can be seen on ESPN+ or often the “home” team will broadcast the meets. Highlights of the Nationals Catie Wilkins is shown on top of the Baylor Competition can be found on YouTube. Acro/tumbling competitors are amazingly pyramid above. The book tells the story of Michael O’Brien an Ogden boy growing up at the old Huntsville monastery in Ogden Valley. This warmhearted memoir describes how a small, insecure boy with a vibrant imagination found an unlikely family in the company of monks at Holy Trinity Abbey, in the mountains of rural Latter-day Saint Utah. Struggling with his parents’ recent divorce, Michael O’Brien discovered a community filled with warmth, humor, idiosyncrasies, and, most of all, listening ears. Filled with anecdotes and delightful ‘behind the scenes” descriptions of his experiences living alongside the monks as they farmed, prayed, buried their dead, ate, and shared the joys of life, Monastery Mornings speaks to the value of spiritual fatherhood, the lasting impact of positive mentoring, and the stability that the spiritual life can offer to people of all ages and walks of life. Monastery Mornings is available at Amazon and area book stores. Carlos & Harley’s Partners with the Wolf Creek Foundation The Wolf Creek Foundation sponsors activities and events to enrich and strengthen the quality of life in our community, particularly for military members and their families. The Foundation’s primary mission is hosting weekend retreats for military families that have a parent either about to deploy or just returning from deployment. This fall will mark the 40th retreat to take place in Ogden Valley. Through a partnership with Hill Air Force Base, the Foundation sponsors these retreats twice a year, where military families relax, connect, and develop skills that help the entire family cope with deployments. At these retreats, each child receives a bear with a recording of their deploying parent’s voice. While the parent is overseas the child can squeeze the bear’s paw and hear their parent’s message of love whenever they are in need. Meals, lodging and entertainment, along with dedicated programming for adults and children are offered at no cost to the family. Carlos & Harley’s is excited to contribute to this worthwhile cause by donating 10% of all sales to the Wolf Creek Foundation through a special event on Wednesday, September 21.
