Eldon Tanner, second counselor in the First Presidency, had this week on the eve of his 50th wedding anniversary. President and Mrs. Tanner left Salt Lake City Tuesday night for Seattle, Wash., where they met the rest of their family prior to a mass flight to Hawaii. President Tanner is host for a family observance of the Golden Wedding anniversary in the islands. There are 38 of the Tanner family participating in the ave love for each observance. Besides President and Mrs. Tanner, the others are their five daughters and their families and the Tanner grandchildren and their families. The only ones not going are two tiny grandchilthe only dren and They are great-grandchil- d. stating with other relatives.' Why Hawaii? On our anniversary !:'! year, I askea Sister Tanner what she would like for her golden wedding. She said, Would you do it if I asked?' I said of course I would and she said, Go with our entire family to Hawaii, " President Tanner said. President and Mrs. Tanner were married Dee. 20, 1919, when both of them were teachers in Hill Spring, Alberta, Canada. She was the former Isabelle Merrill of Hill Spring. The marriage was later solemnized after the ication of the Alberta Temple in 1923. The couple has five daughters, children and one 26 living ded- grand- He was named Minister of Lands and Mines in the Provincial Cabinet in 1937. He continued in government life until he left government service in 1952. While minister he helped shape the oil and gas policy of the Canadian government lie left government service and was a chief officer of two oil firms in Canada and then became president of the Canadian Gas Association, a post he held until his call as an Assistant to the Twelve In October, 1960. lie has alw'ays been active in Church work, serving in various branch, ward and stake capacities. He was president of the Calgary Stake when he was called to be a General Authority. great-grandchil- d. President Tanner has served his profession, community and Church well. While he was principal of the school in Spring IU11, he served as a health officer and constable lie President Tanner was sustained as a member of the Council of the Twelve in the October Conference of 1962, and a year later was called to be a member of the First Presidency, filling a vacancy created by the death of President Henry D.
