George Albert Smith Jr. died in sleep ... land, while his father was European Mission president. He graduated from the old LDS High School in 1922. ACTIVE SCOUT As a youth he was active in Scouting and served as a carrier for the newspaper Deseret News. He attended the University of Utah and graduated with a degree in history in 1926, being named to Phi Kappa Phi honorary scholastic fraternity. After graditation, he was called to the Swiss-Austria- n 6-- 1 about the new experience to worry about wanting to go home. One small boy sat misty eyed on a stool and wouldn't tell hs name. His mother had stayed to help the teacher. "He wants to stay, but he doesn't want his mother to leave," Mrs. Ketcher That won't worry Mrs. Ketcher or Head Start teachers at any of the three because increased schools, parent involvement is due for a big push in this year's program, according to Mrs. Nancy Abraham, new Head Start director (principal). "We want parents to work very closely with teachers as volunteers. We want to give them a lot of responsibility and make them a real part of the program," she said. A reading visual-lingu- readiness program, known as "Tweedy," whimsically will also be used widely this year. It involves the use of an overhead projector and a series of overlays that gradually builds a complete picture while the child describes what he sees. "With the first overlay, the child may see a pink elephant that appears to he standing in the air," Mrs. Abraham said. "Then a building appears beneath the elephant; then people standing below looking up. Finally a string attached to the elephant indicates it is a the balloon." director explained. Dr. Elliot Landau, professor of education, University of Utah, was one of the creators of the program, Mrs. Abraham said. She indicated that consolidating Project Head Start at Salt Lake City.
