RY MARKER By Dear Mary: I have a neighbor who had to wait a good many years before becoming a mother, and she can never have another child. She is so ambitious for tins little daughter that it seems to me she is trjmg to get all the in brilliance and pride achievement out of her one little that, normally, a whole brood of children would provide. The child comes home from nursery school only to have four-year-o- her mother stand over her while she practices on the piano. Then the mother teaches her a lot of Latin phrases. Then, together, they work vx ith a whole string of educational toys and games. After that, the child learns about cooking and housework from hei mother. I tell my friend that suiely this seems too much for a small child to handle, but sbe is very defensive and believes it is not necessary for a child to waste time. Is she right? Dear Neighbor: It sounds as though the child is under too much pressure for good physical and mental health. Many fathers and mothers aie too ambitious for their children. All adults should think about the real aims of education I like Robeit M. Hutchins Idea that education should develop to the greatest extent possible the full potentiality of the individual. And the individual should be the end, the real object, the beneficiary of his education, not just a tool for some other end, as, for ex ample, man is the tool of the state in some Communist countries Man must learn to think for himself, to compare and relate 'deas, to make wise decisions, to be creative. Your neighbor may be crowding her child too much with set. conventional forms of learning. A child needs time to observe nature, people, all kinds of objects and processes. must be ercouraged to cultivate imagination, crea- , ' Friday, September 5 Q 1969 26, aie cerAicompli'limetits tainly a part of excellence, but sometimes they aie abo part of the cause of nervous breakdowns, all too common among children and teenagcis todav M.M.
