Little Julia Old-Fashion- ed Western Carnival Paying Off In Wales MERTHYR TYDFIL, WALES western carnival A good done up in traditional Welsh fashion pays off for the Wales West District The carnival, held inside in the cultural hall of the Merthyr Tydfil branch and out on the grounds for games, competitive activities, pony rides and a greased pole walk, raises enough money for the budgets of all branches in the district Merthyr Tydfil, known around the Church as the birthplace of President David 0. McKay's mother, is situated in the rolling hills of southwestern Wales. Nearly 250 to 300 show up for the carnival and a good majority are neighbors of the branch in Merthyr. They look forward to the annual affair and bring their families to participate in gam.s, buy foodstuffs and soft goods made by members of the Relief Society of each branch. Arnold Jones, youthful president of the Merthyr Tydfil branch, says it also is a good proselyting tool. Missionaries in the various branches .bring investigators over to see the social side of the Church in action. They like what they see, too, because we get baptisms out of these people, he said. He noted that all proceeds are divided up between the district and the branches so that the budget needs of each are met for the coming y ear. A drawing is held at the end cf the Garden Fete, as its termed, at which dolls with homemade clothing are given. Other booths have cakes, candies, fruits, canned goods and wearing apparel to sell.
